FRED BIGWOOD

33707 L/Cpl Frederick William John Bigwood 9 Bn Devon Regiment, formerly 3/7463 Pte Dorset Regiment. Frederick was born in Greenwich and resided in Gussage All Saints. He married Laura Jewer on the 22nd August 1904 in Gussage All Saints. He had originally been wounded in 1914, but recovered enough to return to the war. Frederick was Killed in Action on the 7th May 1917. He has no known grave, and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.


JAMES CULL

P/1936 L/Cpl James Cull Military Foot Police. James was born in Gussage All Saints and baptised there on the 4th January 1880. He resided in Salisbury and was a Police Constable before enlisting for the Great War. A Police portrait of him can be found online here. James had previously served in the Grenadier Guards (7132) having enlisted in Dorchester in December 1897 and serving until September 1902. He served with the regiment in South Africa during the Boer War. He married Elizabeth Biffen in June 1906 and they had one son together. James died of Erysipelas at the Military Isolation Hospital, Aldershot on the 10th August 1915. He is buried in Salisbury (London Road) Cemetery.


ARTHUR CUTLER

230660 (1394) Sgt Arthur William Cutler 1/1 Dorset Yeomanry. Arthur was born in Holt and resided in Wimborne St Giles. He enlisted for the Great War in Sherborne. Arthur Died of Wounds on the 17th November 1917. He is buried in Deir El Belah War Cemetery. His parents Herbert and Julia Cutler resided at Brockington Lodge, Gussage All Saints. His brother is also commemorated on the Gussage All Saints War Memorial, see next entry.


SIDNEY CUTLER

Sidney Cutler was born in Pimperne and resided in Gussage All Saints. Sidney died in Southwark in April 1918, aged 16. He was buried on the 26th April 1918 in Gussage All Saints Churchyard. His parents Herbert and Julia Cutler resided at Brockington Lodge, Gussage All Saints. His brother is also commemorated on the Gussage All Saints War Memorial, see previous entry.


CECIL ELLIOTT

19320 Pte Cecil Charles Elliott Depot Leicestershire Regiment. Cecil was born and resided in Gussage All Saints. He was discharged from the army on the 17th February 1919. Cecil died on the 31st March 1920, aged 27. He was buried on the 5th April 1920 in Gussage All Saints Churchyard. The CWGC lists “Son of Isaac and Elizabeth Elliott, of Gussage All Saints, St. Giles, Salisbury”.


SIDNEY ELLIOTT

26561 Pte Sidney Elliott 6 Bn Wiltshire Regiment, formerly 17550 Pte Dorset Regiment. Sidney was born in Gussage All Saints and resided in Salisbury. He enlisted for the Great War in Wimborne. Sidney Died of Wounds on the 28th January 1917, aged 19. He is buried in Varennes Military Cemetery. The CWGC lists “Son of Tom and Rose Elliott, of Gussage All Saints, nr. Salisbury”.


ARTHUR HARRISON

16860 Pte Frank Arthur Harrison 6 Bn Dorset Regiment. Arthur was born in Bridmore, Wiltshire and resided in Gussage All Saints. He enlisted for the Great War in Wimborne. Arthur was Killed in Action on the 1st November 1916, aged 31. He has no known grave and is now commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the missing on the Somme. The CWGC lists “Son of James Harrison, of Farnham, Blandford, Dorset”. His brother is also commemorated on the Gussage All Saints War Memorial, see next entry.


EDWARD HARRISON

10378 Pte Edward John Harrison 2 Bn Dorset Regiment. Edward was born and resided in Gussage All Saints. He enlisted for the Great War in Wimborne. Edward died on the 11th July 1916 in Mesopotmia. He is buried in Amara War Cemetery. His brother is also commemorated on the Gussage All Saints War Memorial, see previous entry.


FRED JACOBS

10461 Pte Frederick Arthur Jacobs 5 Bn Dorset Regiment. Frederick was born in West Moors and resided in Mannington Holt. He enlisted for the Great War on the 31st August 1914 in Poole. Frederick married Annie Turner Weir on the 5th July 1912. Frederick was Killed in Action (missing) on the 21st August 1915. He is now commemorated on the Helles Memorial. WILLIAM JACOBS

295931 Pte William Charles Jacobs 12 Bn Royal Scots Fusiliers. William was born in Verwood. He enlisted for the Great War in Cupar, Scotland. William died pf disease on the 6th November 1918, aged 30. He is buried in Terlincthun British Cemetery, Wimille. The CWGC lists “Son of John and Mary Elizabeth Jacobs, of West Maers, nr. Wimborne, Dorset”. His brother is also commemorated on the Gussage All Saints War Memorial, see previous entry.


ARTHUR KING

204381 Pte Arthur Joseph King 6 Bn Somerset Light Infantry, formerly 1240 Pte Dorset Yeomanry. Arthur was born in Gussage All Saints and resided in Wimborne. He enlisted for the Great War in Sherborne. Arthur was Killed in Action on the 21st March 1918. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial. His parents Fred and Ella King resided in Gussage All Saints.


NORMAN LOCKYER

128 Sgt Norman Lockyer C Squadron, 1/1 Dorset Yeomanry. Norman was born in Gussage All Saints and resided at Wyke Farm, Gussage All Saints. He was a pre-war territorial soldier with the Dorset Yeomanry and had enlisted at Kingsdown. Norman was Killed in Action during the attack on Chocolate Hill at Gallipoli on the 21st August 1915, aged 29. He is buried in Green Hill Cemetery. The CWGC lists “Son of Joseph and Sarah Lockyer, of Wyke St. Giles, Dorset, and later Berwyn Lodge, Broadstone, Dorset”.


ARTHUR LUSH

12407 Pte Arthur George Lush 1 Bn Coldstream Guards. Arthur was born on the 24th March 1895 in Bowerchalke, Wiltshire. He enlisted for the Great War on the 5th September 1914 in Salisbury. He proceeded to France on the 21st January 1915 and was wounded on the 17th October 1915. Arthur Died of these Wounds at No.6 General Hospital in Rouen on the 14th November 1915, aged 20. He is buried in St Sever Cemetery, Rouen. The CWGC lists “Son of Thomas and Mary Jane Lush, of Bower Chalke, Salisbury”.


STEPHEN PENNY

J/23829 Ordinary Seaman David Stephen Penny HMS Invincible. David was born on the 17th September 1897 in Wimborne and resided in Brockington St Giles. He was a pre-war sailor in the Royal Navy, having enlisted on the 11th March 1913. David was Killed in Action when HMS Invincible was sunk at the Battle of Jutland in the 31st May 1916, aged 18. He is now commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial. The CWGC lists “Son of Walter and Emma Penny, of Brockington, St. Giles, Salisbury”.


JAMES RENYARD

10380 Pte James Davis Renyard 5 Bn Dorset Regiment. James was born and resided in Brockington St Giles. He enlisted for the Great War in Dorchester on the 31st August 1914. James was Killed in Action (Missing) at Gallipoli on the 21st August 1915, aged 26. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Helles Memorial. The CWGC lists “Son of George and Alice Ann Renyard, of The Walk, St. Giles, Salisbury”.


FRANK WHITE

7173 Pte Frank White 1 Bn Dorset Regiment. Frank was born and resided in Gussage All Saints. He was a pre-war regular soldier who had enlisted in March 1904 at Wimborne. He had been discharged from the army in 1907, but was recalled and mobilised from the army reserve in September 1914. Frank was Killed in Action (Missing) on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, 1st July 1916. This was one of the worst moments in the history of the British Army with around 68,000 casualties that day alone. His remains were originally buried by men of the 10th Cheshire Regiment on the 13th July 1916, in the neighbourhood of Authuille Wood, but were subsequently lost. They were rediscovered, along with a group of other men of the 1st Dorsets in 1927. He is now buried in Serre Road Cemetery No.2.
