ERNEST ALFORD | R.G.A.

73193 Gnr Ernest John Alford 122 Siege Bty Royal Garrison Artillery. Ernest was born in Cann and resided at Foxhill, Wanborough, Swindon. He enlisted for the Great War under the Derby Scheme in December 1915 at Swindon and had been a gardener before the war. He was then mobilised in March 1916, being sent to Plymouth. Ernest was posted as missing, believed Killed in Action on the 21st March 1918, aged 34. He has no known grave and is now commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial. The CWGC lists “Son of James Alford, of The Tollhouse, Cann, Shaftesbury, Dorset”. His two brothers are also listed on the Cann War Memorial, see next entry and the last entry.


WILLIAM ALFORD | 16TH WELSH

24045 Pte William Alford 16 Bn Welsh Regiment. William was born in Cann. In 1913 he married Kathleen Henry in Cardiff. He enlisted for the Great War in Cardiff. William was Killed in Action on the 31st March 1916. He is buried in Guards Cemetery, Windy Corner, Cuinchy. His two brothers are also listed on the Cann War Memorial, see previous entry and the last entry.


VICTOR BRICKELL | 10TH R. WARWICKS

28387 Pte Victor Robert Brickell, D Coy, 10 Bn Royal Warwickshire Regiment. Victor was born in Cann resided at Butts Knapp. He enlisted for the Great War in Shaftesbury. Victor died of broncho-pneumonia and dysentery on the 27th March 1917, aged 20. He is buried in Puchevillers British Cemetery. The CWGC lists “Son of Lucy and the late James Brickell, of Butts Knapp, Cann, Shaftesbury, Dorset”.


ARCHIBALD BROWN | THE BUFFS

G/18285 Pte Obrey Archibald Brown 8 Bn The Buffs (East Kent Regiment). Obrey was born and resided in Cann. He enlisted for the Great War in Lewisham. Obrey Died of Wounds on the 19th March 1917. He is buried in Bruay Communal Cemetery Extension. The CWGC lists “Brother of Louisa Steele, of Park Farm, Twyford, Nr. Winchester, Hants”. His brother is also listed on the Cann War Memorial, see next entry.


BERTRAM BROWN | K.R.R.

11140 Rfn Bertram George Brown 1 Bn King’s Royal Rifle Corps. Bertram was born and resided in Cann. He was a pre-war regular soldier, having enlisted in Dorchester. He was taken Prisoner of War near Ypres on the 2nd November 1914. Bertram died whilst a Prisoner of War on the 4th April 1915. He is buried in Hamburg Cemetery. His brother is also listed on the Cann War Memorial, see previous entry.


JOHN CHOWN | 2ND WILTS

7612 Pte John Chown, B Coy, 1 Bn Wiltshire Regiment. John was born at Cann Common and resided in Shaftesbury. He was a pre-war soldier, having enlisted in Devizes. John was listed as missing and presumed Killed in Action on the 31st October 1914 aged 25. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial. The CWGC lists “Son of Samuel Chown, of Cann Common, Shaftesbury; husband of Lucy Chown, of Enmore Green, Shaftesbury, Dorset. Mobilized, Aug., 1914”.


EDWIN FISHER | 7TH DORSETS

14506 Cpl Ernest Edwin Fisher 6 Bn Dorset Regiment. Ernest was born in Melbury Abbas and resided in Cann. He enlisted for the Great War in Shaftesbury. Ernest Died of Wounds on the 13th April 1917. He is buried in Duisans British Cemetery, Etrun.


ROBERT FOWLES | R. INNISKILLING FUSILIERS

42469 Pte Robert Fowles 2 Bn Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, formerly T/38882 Pte Army Service Corps. Robert was born in Cann. He enlisted for the Great War in Southampton. Robert was Killed in Action on the 29th November 1917. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial. His next of kin was listed as his father Charles.


ERNEST HOLLY | R.A.S.C.

T4/039638 Dvr Ernest Walter Holly 798 HT Coy Army Service Corps. Ernest was born in Melbury Abbas and resided in Cann. Ernest died on the 27th December 1918 at No.31 Casualty Clearing Station in Salonica, aged 23. He is buried in Dedeagatch British Cemetery. The CWGC lists “Son of Mark and Harriett Holly, of Cann Common, Shaftesbury, Dorset”.


COSSLEY HUNT | 4TH DORSETS

29223 Pte Cossley John Berkeley Hunt 1 Bn Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry, Formerly 25746 Pte Dorset Regiment. Cossley was born in Shaftesbury and resided in Blandford. He enlisted for the Great War in Dorchester. Cossley was Killed in Action on the 4th October 1917. He is now buried in Bedford House Cemetery. Also remembered on Blandford St Mary War Memorial.


CHARLES KING | 2ND WILTS

23746 Pte Charles King 2 Bn Wiltshire Regiment. Charles was born in Lacock, Wilts and resided in Shaftesbury. He enlisted for the Great War in Salisbury. Charles Died of Wounds whilst a Prisoner of War on the 1st April 1918. He was buried in St Quentin German Cemetery but the grave was subsequently lost. He is now commemorated in St Souplet British Cemetery.


CHARLES MASON | NYASALAND V. RESERVE

William Charles Mason Nyasaland Volunteer Reserve. William was born in Surbiton and resided in Namiwawa Zomba, Nyasaland. William died on the 25th November 1917.


TREVOR SHARP | DORSET YEOMANRY

230785 Cpl Trevor Sharpe 1/1 Dorset Yeomanry. Trevor was born in Marnhull and resided in Donhead St Mary. He married Laura Blanche Foot at Donhead St Mary in February 1906. He enlisted for the Great War in Shaftesbury. Trevor died onboard Hospital Ship Assaye on the 13th October 1918, aged 33. He was buried at sea and is commemorated on the Chatby Memorial. The CWGC lists “Son of Walter and Elizabeth Sharpe; husband of Laura Blanche Sharpe, of Lansdowne, Alcester, Shaftesbury, Dorset”.


STANLEY SMITH | 1/4TH DORSETS

200161 Sgt Stanley Smith 1/4 Bn Dorset Regiment. Stanley was born in Alcester. He enlisted for the Great War in Shaftesbury. Stanley was Killed in Action on the 28th September 1917. He is buried in Baghdad (North Gate) Cemetery.


HENRY STEEL | K.R.R.

C/6415 Rfn Harry Steel 18 Bn King’s Royal Rifle Corps. Harry was born in Bromley and resided at 16 Stroud Road, Woodside, Surrey. He enlisted for the Great War at Croydon in July 1915. Harry Died of Wounds on the 15th September 1916. He has no known grave and is now commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the missing on the Somme. The CWGC lists “Son of Mrs. M. E. Steel, of Ash Cottage, Cann Common, Shaftesbury, Dorset”.


FRANK THOMPSON | NORTHUMBERLAND FUSILIERS

1188 Pte John Francis (Frank) Thompson 1 Bn Northumberland Fusiliers. Frank was born in London. He enlisted for the Great War in Salisbury. Frank Died of Wounds of the 24th September 1915, aged 27. He is buried in Wandsworth (Earlsfield) Cemetery. The CWGC lists “Son of Jane Mary Trowbridge, of Hill View, Cann Common. Shaftesbury.”


ERNEST TROWBRIDGE (D.C.M.) | R.H.A.

8358 BSM Ernest Trowbridge D.C.M. A Bty, 156 Bde, Royal Field Artillery. Ernest was born in Okeford Fitzpaine. He was a pre-war regular soldier. He was awarded a Distinguished Conduct Medal in 1916 (as a member of the Royal Horse Artillery attached to the 20th Anti-Aircraft Battery) “For conspicuous and consistent good work, notably with anti-aircraft guns”. Ernest died on the 27th November 1918 at No.21 Casualty Clearing Station. He is buried in Caudry British Cemetery.


FRANK WHITE | D.C.L.I.

24763 Pte William Frank White 10 Bn Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry. Frank was born and resided in Cann. He enlisted for the Great War in Shaftesbury. Frank was Killed in Action on the 25th March 1918. He has no known grave and is now commemorated on the Arras Memorial.


PERCY T ALFORD | R.G.A. | DIED MARCH 31 1925

126723 Gnr Percy Thomas Alford Royal Garrison Artillery. Percy resided at Cann Hill, Shaftesbury. In December 1913, he had married Mary Ann Perrett and they had a son in October 1914 (Percy James Alford). He enlisted for the Great War in 1915 at Blandford, and had previously worked as a gardener. He was discharged from the army as unfit with tuberculosis in December 1919. Percy died on the 31st March 1925 and is buried in St. Rumbold Churchyard, Cann. His two brothers are also listed on the Cann War Memorial, see the first two entries.
