W. H. BEALE.

28140 Pte William Henry Beale 1 Bn Somerset Light Infantry. William was born in Cranborne and resided in Salisbury (having previously resided with his grandparents in Alderholt). He enlisted for the Great War in Wimborne. William was Killed in Action on the 22nd April 1918. He has no known grave, and is now commemorated on the Loos Memorial.


R. E. BRINE.

3/3802 Sgt Robert Emanuel Brine D.C.M. M.M. 3 Bn Hampshire Regiment. Robert was born in Winfrith-Newburgh and had resided in Cranborne and Acton Vale. He served with the 1st Battalion Hampshire Regiment, and was awarded the Military Medal and Distinguished Conduct Medal. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal “for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty near Fampoux on the morning of 28th March 1918. He took charge of his company when the company commander and all other officers had been wounded. He exhibited great coolness and ability in handling his men, and brought the company out of action with great credit. He has served with this battalion since 1914, and has carried out his duties with distinction and gallantry.” Robert Died on the 19th March 1919, aged 23. He was buried on the 24th March 1919 in Alderholt (St James The Great) Churchyard.

A. HAYTER.

3258 Pte Arthur Hayter 2/7 Bn Hampshire Regiment. Arthur was born in Alderholt in 1890, and resided at The Terrace, Daggons Road, Alderholt. He enlisted for the Great War in November 1915. At some stage, Arthur had transferred to the Tank Corps, but did not see active service with them. He was discharged from the army due to sickness on the 23rd November 1916. Arthur died of tuberculosis on the 17th June 1919 aged 29. He was buried on the 21st June 1919 in Alderholt (St James The Great) Churchyard. His brother also appears on the Alderholt War Memorial, see the next entry.


J. HAYTER.

50169 Rfn James Hayter 12 Bn London Regiment. James was born and resided in Alderholt. He enlisted for the Great War in Dorchester. James was Killed in Action on the 4th July 1918, aged 18. He is buried in Bavelincourt Communal Cemetery. The CWGC lists “Son of Emma M. Hayter, of The Terrace, Alderholt, Salisbury. His brother Arthur also fell.” His brother also appears on the Alderholt War Memorial, see the previous entry.


E. LANE.

581957 Pte Ernest Lane Labour Corps, formerly 17245 Pte Dorset Regiment. Ernest was born and resided in Alderholt. He was discharged from the army on the 18th October 1918. Ernest died on the 19th February 1919 at his home in Alderholt, aged 38. He was buried on the 24th February 1919 in Alderholt (St James The Great) Churchyard.


T. G. LOCKYER.

31976 Sgt Thomas George Lockyer 116 Siege Battery Royal Garrison Artillery. Thomas was born in Cranborne. He was a pre-war regular soldier who had enlisted in Salisbury. Thomas was Killed in Action on the 1st May 1917. He is buried in Tilloy British Cemetery, Tilloy-Les-Mofflaines. He left a widow, Edith.


R. J. NICKLEN.

17846 Pte Roger John Nicklen D Company, 6 Bn Dorset Regiment. Roger was born in Berwick St John and resided in Alderholt. He enlisted for the Great War in Wimborne. Roger Died of Wounds on the 20th October 1918, aged 38. He is buried in St Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen. The CWGC lists “Son of Frank and Mary Nicklen, of Gravel Pitt Farm, Alderholt, Dorset. A Gamekeeper.” He left a widow, Alice.


F. H. PALMER.

31841 Pte Frederick Henry Charles Palmer 2 Bn King’s Shropshire Light Infantry, formerly S4/158396 Pte 22 Field Bakery, Army Service Corps. Frederick was born in Wareham and resided in Alderholt. He enlisted for the Great War in Brockenhurst, having previously worked as a gardener (and undoubtedly helped with his fathers bakery and grocers business). Frederick was Killed in Action on the 5th September 1918, aged 24. He is buried in Karasouli Military Cemetery. The CWGC lists “Son of Mrs. K. Palmer, of “Whiteleaze,” Alderholt, Dorset, and the late J. W. Palmer.”


W. H. ROSE.

205033 Pte William Henry Rose 2 Bn Devonshire Regiment. William was born and resided in Alderholt. He enlisted for the Great War in Poole. William was Killed in Action on the 24th April 1918, aged 20. He is buried in Adelaide Cemetery, Villers-Bretonneux. The CWGC lists “Son of James and Emily Rose, of Hill Cottage, Alderholt, Salisbury, Wilts.”


A. SIMS.

15237 Pte Alfred Sims 15 Bn Hampshire Regiment. Alfred was born in London and resided in Burghelere, Hampshire. He enlisted for the Great War in Winchester. Alfred was Killed in Action on the 7th June 1917, aged 22. He is buried in Bus House Cemetery. The CWGC lists “Adopted son of Frank and Adelaide Fry, of Cripplestyle, Alderholt, Salisbury.”


O. J. SIMS.

L/10555 Pte Obediah James Sims 7 Bn The Buffs (East Kent Regiment). Obediah was born on Daggons Road (running between Cranborne and Alderholt) and resided in Cranborne. He also enlisted for the Great War in Cranborne. Obediah was Killed in Action on the 21st March 1918, aged 19. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial. The CWGC lists “Son of Lewis Sims, of Batterley Drove, Cranborne, Dorset”.


W. SIMS.

26110 Pte Walter Sims 2 Bn Dorset Regiment. Walter was born in Alderholt. He enlisted for the Great War in Wimborne. Walter Died at Sea on the 14th September 1917. He was buried at sea and is now commemorated on the Chatby Memorial.


P. SPIERS.

26723 Pte Pascoe Spiers 2 Bn Wiltshire Regiment, formerly 17408 Pte Dorset Regiment. Pascoe was born in Alderholt and resided in Salisbury. He enlisted for the Great War in Dorchester. Pascoe was Killed in Action on the 21st March 1918. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial.


W. H. SWIFT.

Lieutenant Wilfred Harold Swift Indian Army Reserve of Officers Attached to 51st Sikhs (Frontier Force). Wilfred was born in New Brighton, Cheshire. He had resided in Alderholt before commissioning into the 1/6th Bn Hampshire Regiment in 1914. He transferred to the Indian Army in September 1915. He married Marjorie Fox-Strangeways on the 25th January 1917. Wilfred died at Samara on the 22nd April 1917. He has no known grave, and is commemorated on the Basra Memorial. His parents Harold and Constance Swift resided at Heathcote, Alderholt.


E. THORNE.

10361 Pte Edwin Thorne 5 Bn Dorset Regiment. Edwin was born in Woodlands and resided in Verwood. He enlisted for the Great War in Dorchester. Edwin was Killed in Action (Presumed Dead) on the 8th October 1917, aged 23. He has no known grave and is now commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial. The CWGC lists “Son of Mrs. Annie Thorne, of The Bungalow, Woodlands, Verwood, Dorset, and the late Frederick Thorne.”


F. THORNE.

1408 Pte Frank Thorne 1/4 Bn Hampshire Regiment. Frank was born and resided in Alderholt. He enlisted for the Great War in Fordingbridge. Frank Died of Wounds on the 21st January 1916. He has no known grave, and is commemorated on the Basra Memorial.


F. O. VINEY.

10445 Pte Frederick Onslow Viney 10 Bn Hampshire Regiment. Frederick was born in Bishopstoke and resided in Alderholt. He enlisted for the Great War in Fordingbridge. Frederick Died of Wounds on the 2nd September 1918, aged 23. He is buried in Karasouli Military Cemetery. The CWGC lists “
Son of George and Mary Viney, of Daggons Rd., Alderholt, Salisbury.”
