K/18896 Sto 1 Cl George Henry Adams HMS Defence. George was born on the 28th March 1891 in Sherborne. He was a pre war Sailor in the Royal Navy, having enlisted in April 1913. George was Killed in Action at the Battle of Jutland on the 31st May 1916. HMS Defence was sunk when it’s magazine exploded after being hit by German fire, with the loss of all crew. His body was not recovered for burial. He is commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial. His next of kin was listed as his wife Flossie, living at 9 Ludbourne Road, Sherborne.

369 Cpl George Fred Andrews Dorset Yeomanry. George was born in Sherborne. He was a pre war territorial soldier, having enlisted in Sherborne. George was Killed in Action at Gallipoli on the 21st August 1915, aged 22. He is buried in Green Hill Cemetery. The CWGC lists “Son of Edward George and Susan L. Andrews, of 22, Ludbourne Rd., Sherborne, Dorset”.

47429 Pte Henry John Andrews 1 Bn Northamptonshire Regiment. Henry was born in Corton Denham, Somerset. He enlisted for the Great War in Castle Cary, having previously worked as a farm labourer. Henry was Killed in Action on the 20th April 1918. He is buried in Post Office Rifles Cemetery, Festubert.

162890 Gnr Hubert Claude Anstie D Bty 38 Brigade Royal Field Artillery. Hubert was born and resided in Sherborne. He enlisted for the Great War in Sherborne too. Hubert was Killed in Action on the 5th August 1917, aged 19. He is buried in Brandhoek New Military Cemetery. The CWGC lists “Son of Samuel and Alice Anstie, of Higher Cheap St., Sherborne, Dorset”.

16442 Pte Ernest Baker 6 Bn Northamptonshire Regiment. Ernest was born in Sherborne. He enlisted for the Great War in Sherborne too. Ernest was Killed in Action on the 26th September 1916, aged 37. His remains were discovered in 1928 and are now buried in Serre Road Cemetery No.2. The CWGC lists “Son of Mrs. Susan Baker, of 86, Back Abbey, Sherborne, Dorset”. 2 Lieut W Hunting wrote to his mother – “It is with sincere regret that I have to inform you that your son was killed in action during the attack on September 26th-27th. I know you will be glad to hear that he was a very good soldier, and did his duty nobly. He was beloved by all who knew him, and my fellow officers and myself, together with his old comrades, mourn our loss, and extend to you our deep sympathy.”

97520 S/Smith Edward G Baker 20 Div Ammo Col Royal Field Artillery. Edward was born in Patcham, Sussex and resided in Sherborne. He married Victoria Kate Vallard in July 1888 at Sherborne and they had seven children together. He enlisted for the Great War in Hilsea, Hampshire but had previously worked as a Farrier in Sherborne for several years. Edward died of Pneumonia and Pleurisy on the 10th November 1916, aged 48. He is buried in St Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen. The CWGC lists “Husband of Mrs. V. K. Baker, of Newland, Sherborne, Dorset”.

11229 L/Sgt Edwin John Baker B Coy 6 Bn Dorset Regiment. Edwin was born and resided in Sherborne. He enlisted for the Great War in Battersea. Edwin was Killed in Action on the 16th February 1916, aged 26. He has no known grave and is now commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial to the missing in Ypres. The CWGC lists “Son of the late Albert and Emma Baker, of Long Street Stores, Sherborne, Dorset”.

3/7666 L/Cpl Harry Jeffery Baker 1 Bn Dorset Regiment. Harry was born and resided in Sherborne. He was a Special Reservist and had enlisted in Sherborne in August 1914. He had previously served with the Volunteers, and was a member of the National Reserve on enlistment. Harry was Killed in Action on the 24th May 1915, aged 42. He is now commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial to the missing in Ypres. The CWGC lists “Husband of Ellen Jane Baker, of Long St., Sherborne. Dorsetshire”. Harry had only been on the Western Front for two weeks when he was killed.

17587 L/Cpl Reginald William Baker 2 Bn Dorset Regiment. Reginald was born in Burnham, Somerset. He enlisted for the Great War in Sherborne. Reginald was Killed in Action in Mesopotamia on 25th March 1917. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Basra Memorial.
BALDOCK C. B.
Lieut Col Charley Blair Baldock 108 Indian Infantry, Military Administrator Karmaran. Charley was born on 21st August 1866. He commissioned into the Devonshire Regiment on 29th August 1885. In March 1888 he transferred to the Indian Army, seeing service in Burma that year before being promoted to Captain in 1896. In 1903 he was further promoted to Major and in August 1911 became Lieut Col and appointed command of the 108th Indian Infantry. Charley died of dysentery on 19th October 1915, aged 49. He was originally buried in North Point Christian Cemetery, Kamaran Island, but is now commemorated on the Maala Memorial No.2, Yemen.

12252 Pte Albert George Barrett 5 Bn Dorset Regiment. Albert was born in Bradpole and resided at 20 Ludbourne Road, Sherborne. He enlisted for the Great War in November 1914 at Sherborne. Albert had also married in November 1914 to Louisa Ann Smith in Sherborne. Albert was Killed in Action at Gallipoli on the 21st August 1915. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Helles Memorial. After his death, Louisa re-married in November 1916 to another soldier, 2173 John Jackson of the Essex Regiment.

37245 Pte Frederick Batson 1/5 Bn South Lancashire Regiment, formerly 26225 Pte Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry. Frederick was born and resided in Sherborne. He had married Elsie Frances Marshalsea in January 1909, and they had 4 children together. He enlisted for the Great War in Sherborne too. Frederick died from pernicious anemia at the 3rd Western General Hospital, Newport (Monmouthshire) on 22nd March 1918, aged 29. He is buried in Sherborne Cemetery. The CWGC lists “Son of Mr. and Mrs. C. Batson, of Coombe Terrace, Sherborne; husband of E. F. Batson, of Coldharbour, Sherborne”.
BAXTER W. H.
Lt Col Walter Herbert Baxter T.D. 1/4 Bn Dorset Regiment. Walter was born in Brixton, Surrey and resided in Sherborne. In July 1888 he married Maude Ellis Quick in Sherborne. After studying law, he became the proprietor of the Dorsetshire Brewery in Sherborne. Walter had strong links in Sherborne, being a director of the Sherborne Coal Company, Sherborne Cottage Company and Dorset Electrical Supply Company. He was also a governor of Sherborne Almshouses, a member of the Urban Council and Captain of the Fire Brigade. A long standing military volunteer, Walter had served with the Militia and Territorials for many years prior to the outbreak of war. He proceeded to Mesopotamia with his Battalion in February 1916. He returned to India on the 13th May 1917 on sick leave. Walter died of Meningitis on the 18th May 1917, aged 52. He is buried in Kala Khan Cemetery, Nainital, India.

BELL B. E.
POSSIBLY – 230829 Pte Edward Bertie Bell 1/1st Dorset Yeomanry. “Bert” as he was known, was born and resided in Sherborne. Before the war he was employed by Messrs F. Dimon & Co, degreasers at Alexandra Road, Yeovil. He enlisted for the Great War shortly after the outbreak, in Sherborne. Bert was Killed in Action (reported wounded and missing) on 21st November 1917, aged 30. He has no known grave and is now commemorated on the Jerusalem Memorial. The CWGC lists “Son of Alice Annie Abbott, of 4, Camborne Place, Pen Mill, Yeovil, Somerset”.
BISS H.
27342 Pte Harry Christopher Biss 2 Bn Dorset Regiment. Harry was born and resided in Sherborne. He enlisted for the Great War in Sherborne too. Harry died of disease at No. 24 Indian General Hospital in Mesopotamia on 12th July 1917, aged 32. He is buried in Kut War Cemetery. The CWGC lists “Son of George Christopher Biss, of 106, Coombe, Sherborne, Dorset”.
BOWN A. J.
9525 Pte Albert John Bown 1 Bn Dorset Regiment. Albert was born in Coombe, and resided in Sherborne. He was a pre war regular soldier, having enlisted in Dorchester in February 1913. Albert was one of the first British troops overseas in August 1914, and was originally reported missing on the 26th August 1914. He later re-joined his battalion on 13th September. However, he was once again reported missing on 13th October 1914, although this time he had been taken Prisoner of War. He was to remain a POW for the duration of the war. Albert died of pneumonia in the Reserve Hospital, Hamm-Munden, Germany on 13th November 1918, aged 24. He was originally buried in Hannoversch Muenden Cemetery, before being exhumed and reburied in 1923 in Niederzwehren Cemetery, Kassel. The CWGC lists “Son of Mrs. Martha Ann Bown, of Back Lane, Sherborne, Dorset”. His brother is also commemorated on the Sherborne War Memorial, see next entry.

BOWN A. E.
8965 Pte Arthur Bown 2 Bn Dorset Regiment. Arthur was born and resided in Sherborne. He was a pre war regular soldier having enlisted in Dorchester in June 1910. He had previously served in the 3rd (Special Reserve) and 4th (Territorial) Battalions of the Dorset Regiment. Arthur was originally sent to the 1st Battalion Dorset Regiment, where he was in trouble numerous times for overstaying is pass or being absent from parade. He was transferred to the 2ns Battalion in January 1912, and was again in trouble for missing a button off his great coat on guard, having a dirty rifle on guard and being drunk in barracks. The 2nd Battalion were sent to Mesopotamia as part of the Indian Expeditionary Force “D” in November 1914, with Arthur along with them. He was severely wounded with a gunshot wound to the left foot at Sahil in November 1914. He was taken Prisoner of War at the fall of Kut after months of siege, along with what remained of the shattered 2nd Battalion and Indian Expeditionary Force “D”. It was whilst a Prisoner of War he died of malaria and enteritis in Turkish hands reportedly on 30th August 1916 at Bagtche Hospital. He is buried in Baghdad (North Gate) War Cemetery. His brother is also commemorated on the Sherborne War Memorial, see previous entry.

230739 (1485) Pte Arthur John Burden 1/1st Dorset Yeomanry. Arthur was born in Tarrant Gunville and resided in Sherborne. He enlisted for the Great War in Sherborne too. In April 1907 he married Alice Eliza Charlton, and they resided together at Castleton, Sherborne. At this time, Arthur was working as a groom at the Sherborne Castle Stables. Arthur died whilst a Prisoner of War in Turkey on 16th August 1916. He was originally buried in Afion Kara Hissar Cemetery, but his remains were exhumed in 1922 and moved to Baghdad (North Gate) War Cemetery.

T/18750 Dvr Frank Burgess 26 Brigade Ammunition Column, Army Service Corps. Frank was born in Sherborne and resided in Staines. In July 1907, he married Mary Ann Wilde in Sherborne and they went on to have four children. He enlisted for the Great War in Dorchester, but was working in Wales at the time. Frank died of a gunshot wound at No.2 Casualty Clearing Station on 27th June 1917 . He is buried in Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension, Nord.

329575 Pte Harry Button 2 Bn Suffolk Regiment, formerly 8380 Pte Cambridgeshire Regiment. Harry was born and resided in Sherborne. He enlisted for the Great War in Dorchester, having previously worked as a bricklayer. Harry was Killed in Action on 30th August 1918, aged 31. He is buried in Ecoust-St. Mein British Cemetery. The CWGC lists “Son of William and Angelina Button, of 273, Long St., Sherborne, Dorset”.
BROWN O.
Lieut Oscar Brown 7th Hariana Lancers, attached 4th Dragoon Guards. Oscar was born on 20th May 1888 at Sherborne. He was educated at Sherborne School, before going to the Royal Military College Sandhurst where he commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant into the Northamptonshire Regiment in September 1908. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1910 and in September 1912, exchanged into the Indian Army, joining the 7th Hariana Lancers. Whilst riding in the 1913 Delhi Cup, he was injured when his horse fell and was subsequently sent back to the UK for treatment. When war broke out in August 1914, he was still in the UK, and therefore attached to the 4th Dragoon Guards. Oscar was Killed in Action by a shell on 24th April 1915, aged 26. He was originally buried at Elverdinghe, but was exhumed and re-buried in 1919 at Duhallow A.D.S. Cemetery. The CWGC lists “Son of Mary Ann Brown, of Sherborne, Dorset, and the late William Hooper Masters Brown. Sherborne School, R.M.C., Sandhurst”.

338681 Gnr Ernest Case 142 (Durham) Heavy Battery Royal Garrison Artillery. Ernest was born on 1st March 1891 in Lyme Regis and resided in Sherborne. He enlisted for the Great War in Sherborne too. He had previously been working as a Grocer. In July 1915, he married Adelaide Alicce March in Sherborne. Ernest Died of Wounds at No.4 Casualty Clearing Station on 8th November 1917, aged 24. He is buried in Dozinghem Military Cemetery. The CWGC lists “Son of Alfred Case, of 26, Church St., Lyme Regis, Dorset; husband of Adelinde Alice Case (nee March)”.

230527 (1233) Shoeing Smith Cpl Herbest Edward Catchpole 1/1st Dorset Yeomanry. Herbert was born in Rackheath, Norfolk and enlisted for the Great War in Sherborne, having been a Farrier by trade. He married Emma Caddy in December 1901 in Sherborne and they went on to have 5 children. Herbert died of pneumonia on 13th October 1918 at 27th General Hospital, Cairo, aged 41. He is buried in Cairo War Memorial Cemetery. The CWGC lists “Son of James and Ruth Catchpole, of Rack Heath, Norwich; husband of Emma Catchpole, of 23, Simons Rd., Sherborne, Dorset”.
CHAFFIN T.
735 Pte Trevor Chaffin 1/1st Dorset Yeomanry. Trevor was born and resided in Sherborne. He was a pre-war territorial soldier in the Dorset Yeomanry, having enlisted in Sherborne. Trevor was Killed in Action at the Charge at Agagia, on the 26th February 1916. It was one of the last great cavalry charges made by the British Army. Trevor is also remembered on our Agagia Roll of Honour. He is buried in Alexandria (Chatby) Military and War Cemetery.

202474 Pte Harold Wilfred Charles 1/5 Bn Royal Scots Fusiliers. Harold was born in Freshwater, Isle of Wight. He enlisted for the Great War in Glasgow. Harold was Killed in Action at Gaza on 19th April 1917. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Jerusalem Memorial. After the war, his mother resided at Horsecastle Road, Sherborne.
CHURCHILL C. R.
M/323833 Pte Clarence Reginald Churchill 42nd Motor Ambulance Convoy, Army Service Corps. Clarence was born in Gillingham and resided in Sherborne. In December 1910, he married Maud Amelia Galpin in Sherborne. They had three children. He enlisted for the Great War in Windsor. Clarence died of influenza and pneumonia on 7th November 1918, aged 32. He is buried in Cambrai East Military Cemetery. The CWGC lists “Son of Walter and Mary Churchill, of Sherborne; husband of Maude Churchill, of 18, Wingfield Rd., Sherborne, Dorset”.

Steward Ernest Raymond Churchill HM Hospital Ship “Guildford Castle”. Ernest was born in Blandford in 1882 and resided at Acreman Street, Sherborne. Ernest drowned at sea off the coast of Kent on 9th January 1919. He is commemorated in Sherborne Cemetery.

207399 Cpl Arthur Frederick Clarke 2 Bn Worcestershire Regiment, formerly 1298 Dorset Yeomanry. Arthur was born in and resided in Westbury, Sherborne. He enlisted for the Great War in Sherborne. In January 1915, he married Laura Margaretta Jones in Hereford. They had a son born in October 1915. Arthur was Killed in Action on 29th September 1918. He is buried in Pigeon Ravine Cemetery, Epehy.

137342 Pte Harold Frederick Coffin 6 Bn Machine Gun Corps, formerly 46200 Pte Essex Regiment. Harold was born in Sherborne. He enlisted for the Great War in Sherborne too. Harold was Killed in Action on 13th July 1918. He is buried in Ridge Wood Military Cemetery.

40821 Pte Frank Collins 2 Bn South Wales Borderers, formerly 27014 Pte Dorset Regiment. Frank was born and resided in Sherborne. In June 1911, he married Emily Sansom in Sherborne. He enlisted for the Great War in Sherborne too. Frank was Killed in Action on 11th April 1918. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial.

He enlisted for the Great War in Sherborne too. Samuel died on 1st November 1918, aged 30. He is buried in Sherborne Cemetery. 88795 Gnr Eli Cooper 16 Battery, 41 Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. Eli was born in Sherborne. He enlisted for the Great War in Gillingham. Eli died of tetanus at No.18 General Hospital on 20th May 1917, aged 43. He is buried in Etaples Military Cemetery. The CWGC lists “Son of Stuart and Martha Cooper, of 26, Lower Newland, Sherborne, Dorset”.

Wilfred Died of Wounds on 11th June 1918, aged 27. He is buried in Doullens Communal Cemetery Extension No.2. The CWGC lists “Son of Charles and Hannah Curtis, of 105, Coombe, Sherborne, Dorset”.

3/8826 Pte Robert Henry Davis 1 Bn Dorset Regiment. Robert was born and resided in Sherborne. He was a Special Reservist, having enlisted in Dorchester. Robert was present at Hill 60 on the 1st May 1915 when the 1st Dorsets were gassed in one of the first of such attacks of this new form of warfare. Robert died from gas poisoning on 2nd May 1915, aged 29. He has no known grave and is now commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial to the missing in Ypres. The CWGC lists “Son of Mr. and Mrs. H. Davis, of South Cheriton, Somerset; husband of Florence Miller (formerly Davis), of 4, Simons Rd., Sherborne, Dorset”.

18061 Pte Arthur Delement 2 Bn Coldstream Guards. Arthur was born and resided in Sherborne. He enlisted for the Great War in Sherborne too. Arthur Died of Wounds on 28th May 1918, aged 28. He is buried in Bois-Guillaume Coummunal Cemetery Extension. The CWGC lists “Son of Mr. W. and Mrs. A. Delement, of Haydon, Sherborne, Dorset”.
DEWFALL T.
12813 Pte Tom Dewfall 6 Bn Dorset Regiment. Tom was born and resided in Sherborne. He enlisted for the Great War in January 1915 at Sherborne and had worked as a Plumber pre war. He proceeded to France with the 6th Dorsets in July 1915. He was severely wounded on 31st March 1918 by a shell, receiving shrapnel wounds to the chest, thigh and legs. Tom Died of these Wounds at No.3 Canadian Stationary Hospital in Doullens on 1st April 1918, aged 29. He is buried in Doullens Communal Cemetery Extension No.1. The CWGC lists “Only son of Tom and Lilian Elizabeth Dewfall, of Greenhill, Sherborne, Dorset”.

15326 Pte Thomas Diment 1 Bn Somerset Light Infantry. Thomas was born in Buckland Newton and resided in Sherborne. He enlisted for the Great War in Yeovil. Thomas was Killed in Action on 6th April 1915, aged 27. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial. The CWGC lists “Son of Mrs. Sarah A. Diment, of Piddletrenthide, Dorchester”.

231583 Pte William Grant Diment 1/1st Dorset Yeomanry. William was born in Heytesbury and resided in Sherborne. He enlisted for the Great War in Sherborne too. In July 1911 he married Minnie Elizabeth Cross in Sherborne and they had a daughter together. William Died of Wounds on 13th November 1917. He is buried in Ramleh War Cemetery.

2nd Lieutenant William Dingley 7 Bn Suffolk Regiment, formerly 265 Pte 19 Bn Royal Fusiliers. William was born in South Mimms, Middlesex. He was educated at Dunheved College. He first served in France as a Private in the 2nd Public School Battalion, Royal Fusiliers. He was later commissioned into the Suffolk Regiment in July 1916. William Died of Wounds on 29th April 1917, aged 21. He is buried in Duisans British Cemetery, Etrun. The CWGC lists “Son of William and Ruth Dingley, of 41, Clyde Rd., Addiscombe, Surrey”. His father originally came from Sherborne.

TR/8/9436 Pte Augustus Kenneth Seymour Dodge 7 Bn Dorset Regiment (35 Training Reserve Battalion). Augustus was born and resided in Cheap Street, Sherborne. DOWNTON W. J.
3/7944 Pte Walter James Downton 3 Bn Dorset Regiment. Walter was born in Sherborne and had been a pre-war regular soldier, enlisting in August 1890 at Taunton for the Somerset Light Infantry. After his initial period of service (including positing in Gibraltar and India), he was transferred to the Army Reserve in August 1897. He was re-called to the Army in October 1899 and was sent to the Boer War in South Africa, where he served from November 1899 to August 1902. He was finally discharged from service in on his return to the UK August 1902. He resided at Cedar Cottage, Long Street, Sherborne. In December 1902 he married Emily Gard at Crewkerne and they had 5 children together. With the outbreak of the Great War, Walter re-enlisted in the Dorset Regiment Special Reserve at Sherborne in September 1914. Originally posted to the 6th Battalion, he was transferred back to the 3rd Battalion in December 1914. He was discharged from in the Army in February 1916 due to Paraplegia. This had originated at Bovington Camp in December 1915, where he had become unable to walk and had fallen several times. He became very unsteady on his feet and suffered from jerky movements of limbs and difficulty talking. Walter died on 8th April 1917 of Cerebral softening (traumatic brain injury), aged 44. He is buried in Sherborne Cemetery.

103224 Cpl Edward John Dungey 34 Bn Machine Gun Corps, formerly 27611 Dorset Regiment. Edward was born in Milborne Port, Somerset. He resided in Ludborne Road, Sherborne and enlisted for the Great War in Sherborne too. In January 1913 he married Minnie Burgess in Sherborne. Edward was Killed in Action on 14th October 1918. He has no known grave and is commemorated on Tyne Cot Memorial.

1488 Pte Percy Victor John Dunn 1/1st Dorset Yeomanry. Percy was born and resided in Beaminster. He enlisted for the Great War in Sherborne, where he had been working for a short time. Percy was Killed in Action at the Charge at Agagia, on the 26th February 1916, aged 18. It was one of the last great cavalry charges made by the British Army. Percy is also remembered on our Agagia Roll of Honour. He is buried in Alexandria (Chatby) Military And War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt. The CWGC lists “Son of Francis John and Bessie Ada Dunn, of Fleet St., Beaminster, Dorset”. He is also commemorated on the Beaminster War Memorial.

3/8160 Acting L/Cpl Lewis Frederick James Durrant 1 Bn Dorset Regiment. Lewis was born and resided in Sherborne. In August 1906 he married Florence Emma Pope at Sherborne, and they had 5 sons together. He enlisted for the Great War in Sherborne in September 1914, joining the 3rd Dorsets. He had previously served in the Middlesex Regiment and Dorset Yeomanry pre-war. In January 1915 Lewis was posted to the 1st Battalion Dorset Regiment on the Western Front. Lewis Died of Wounds on 22nd February 1915, aged 39. He is buried in Wulverghem-Lindenhoek Road Military Cemetery. The CWGC lists “Husband of Florence Emma Durrant, of George St., Sherborne, Dorset”.

The CWGC lists “Son of Mrs. Eliza Edgington, of The Court, Cassington, Oxford”. As Herbert was declared missing, the family made enquires through the British Red Cross, to see if they could locate him as a Prisoner of War. This was done by Mr W J Edgington, 249 Cooks Lanes, Sherborne.

He is buried in Faubourg D’Amiens Cemetery, Arras.

13060 Pte Herbert (Known as Bert) John Victor Gould 6 Bn Dorset Regiment. Herbert was born in Bristol and resided at Mill House, Bradford Abbas. He enlisted for the Great War on 7th April 1915 in Dorchester, having previously worked as a Dairy hand for Mr Whittle at Bradford Abbas. In October 1916, he was wounded during a bombing accident, received shrapnel wound to the right leg. After spending two weeks recovering at a Field Ambulance, he returned to his battalion. Bert was Killed in Action on 14th May 1917. He is buried in Brown’s Copse Cemetery, Roeux. His personal effects were returned to his father at Castleton, Sherborne in October 1917 including: correspondence, cards, religious book, cigarette case, purse with one farthing and his ID disc.

Captain Gerard Montague Gordon 5 Bn Attd 12 Bn Royal Fusiliers. Gerard was born in Sherborne on 8th January 1891. He was educated at Wellington College, before attending the South Eastern Agricultural College, Wye. At Wellinggton, he had been a keen cricket player and had also represented the school in the Public Schools’ Racket Competition. In August 1914, he was commissioned into the Territorial Force. Gerard was Killed in Action on 9th June 1917, aged 26. He is buried in Reninghelst New Military Cemetery. At the time of his death, he was working as the Battalion Adjutant. The CWGC lists “Son of George and Mary Gordon, of Wincombe Park, Wilts, and The Barn House, Sherborne, Dorset”. A fellow officer wrote the following of him – “He was one of the bravest men I have met out here, and his sense of duty in returning to the front so soon after his recent operation filled us all with the deepest admiration. He was always so merry and bright, and a great favourite with us all.” Another officer wrote – “His parting from us has caused a deep cloud over the battalion, because he was one of the best, and one we could ill afford to lose.” His original grave marker is on display at St Mary Magdalene Church, Sherborne.

Tom was Killed in Action during the siege of Kut on 13th January 1916. He is buried in Kut War Cemetery.

He had served with his regiment in South Africa during the Boer War. His wife died in India in 1914, leaving four children. Frederick died in India on 15th April 1917, aged 37. He is buried in Meerut Cantonment Cemetery.

5896 Pte Frederick Hann 1 Bn Dorset Regiment. Frederick was born in Henstridge, Somerset and resided in Standlynch, Salisbury. He was a pre-war regular soldier, having enlisted in Dorchester. In December 1910 he married Minnie Chubb in Sherborne and they would go on to have a daughter together. Frederick Died of Wounds on 16th September 1914, aged 31. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the La Ferte-Sous-Jouarre Memorial. The CWGC lists “Son of William Hann; husband of Minnie Hann, of 259, Hound St., Sherborne, Dorset”.

2 Lieut Frederick McMahon Hardman 4 Bn Royal Fusiliers. Frederick was born in Colchester and had attended Eton before heading to King’s College, Cambridge. Frederick was Killed in Action during house to house fighting on 29th October 1914, aged 24. Frederick was commissioned into the Special Reserve in July 1912. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial. The CWGC lists “Son of the late Capt J. W. J. Hardman (1st Royal Dragoons), and of Frances Hardman, of The Lattice House, Sherborne, Dorset”. Frederick’s mother was the commandant of the Sherborne Red Cross Society. His medals were sold at auction in 2013 and can be viewed here (please not we have no connection with the sale or vendor).

14365 Pte William Henry Hodges 5 Bn Dorset Regiment. William was born and resided in Sherborne. He had originally proceeded overseas with the 6th Battalion Dorset Regiment in September 1915, but was transferred to the 5th Battalion at some stage before his death. William Died of Wounds at No.1 General Hospital on 30th September 1916, aged 22. He is buried in Etretat Churchyard. The CWGC lists “Son of William John Hodges, of 17, Simons Rd., Sherborne, Dorset”. A nursing sister serving on an Ambulance Train wrote to his parents – “I promised your son that I would write to you and let you know he was travelling down from the front to a hospital. He was very ill, and I was very anxious as to how he would get on. He was wounded in the chest, throat and leg but was very cheerful and patient and very proud and delighted at what he had helped to do in this last big fight. I have not yet heard if he improved, but feared the worst. We did everything possible for him, and you may rest assured that he had all he wanted and constant care and he did not suffer very much. He told me he had only been out six weeks. You would have been proud of your son if you had seen how brave and cheerful he was, and so un-complaining. Hoping that he improved in hospital, and if this was not God’s will, that you may be comforted knowing how brave he was“. Williams parents also received a letter from the Assistant Matron at No.1 General Hospital – “I very much regret to have to tell you your son died this afternoon (Sept. 30th) at 4.15 p.m. Shortly after he was admitted to hospital here, from the results of gun shot wounds of neck and right leg, and of pneumonia. Everything was done for his comfort and to alleviate pain from the time he came in here, and he passed away quietly. He will be buried with military honours at the military cemetery here. With sincere sympathy.”

HODGSON F. H.
Capt Francis Herbert Hodgson O Flight, Royal Air Force. Frances was born in in Sherborne on 11th March 1896. He attended Connaught School, Weymouth before moving to Harrow School. He later attended Magdalen College, Oxford before starting medical studies at St Mary’s Hospital in June 1915. He was commissioned into the Royal Flying Corps in February 1916 and by June 1916 was a pilot serving with 15 Squadron in France. On 6th September 1916 he was wounded whilst flying on artillery reconnaissance by an enemy aircraft and transferred to light duties to recover. In July 1917 he once again returned to flying, this time with 4 Squadron. With the formation of the Royal Air Force in 1918, Francis was transferred over and was part of 21 Squadron. In October 1918 he was again transferred to 35 Squadron and on 4th November 1918 was wounded. Francis was killed in a flying accident at Elincourt on 19th November 1918, aged 22. He is buried in Premont British Cemetery. The CWGC lists “Son of Charles Herbert Hodgson, of Wallace House, Sherborne, Dorset”. His commanding officer wrote “I had specially asked for him from home, and though he had been with me only a short time, I had fully appreciated how gallant an officer he was and all the fine work he was doing. I had chosen him out to command ‘O’ flight, a sort of miniature squadron, for which I wanted a specially selected officer, and hoped that this would be only a step towards the squadron command which I had in view for him.” His brother is also on the Sherborne War Memorial, see next entry.

HODGSON R. E.
Lieut Richard Eveleigh Hodgson 204 Squadron Royal Air Force, formerly Lieut 4 Bn King’s (Liverpool) Regiment. Richard was born in Sherborne on 11th March 1894. He was educated at St Christopher’s School, Eastbourne and then Sherborne School. He then attended New College, Oxford. In September 1914 he was commissioned into the King’s (Liverpool) Regiment and proceeded overseas with them in May 1915. He continued to serve on the Western Front until being invalid home in April 1917 with appendicitis. On recovery, he was attached to the Royal Flying Corps in December 1917. In June 1918, he was formally transferred to the Royal Air Force after becoming a qualified pilot. In August 1918 he returned to France with 204 Squadron. Richard was Killed in Action near Dunkirk on 16th September 1918, aged 24. He is buried in Coxyde Military Cemetery. The CWGC lists “Son of Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Hodgson, of Flat 3, 4, Bodorgan Rd., Bournemouth. Of Sherborne, Dorset”. His brother is also on the Sherborne War Memorial, see previous entry.

40834 L/Cpl Frederick Arthur Huss 5 Bn South Wales Borderers, formerly 27463 Pte Dorset Regiment. Frederick was born and resided in Sherborne. On 2nd June 1913, Frederick married Florence May Harvey in Sandford Orcas, Sherborne and in October 1916 they had a daughter. He enlisted for the Great War in Sherborne too, having previously worked as a Butcher. Frederick was Killed in Action on 25th March 1918. He was originally buried by the Germans but his remains were re-buried in 1920 in Grevillers British Cemetery. His brother is also on the Sherborne War Memorial, see next entry.

In December 1913, William married Alice Victoria Higgins in Gloucester and in 1915 they had a son. He enlisted for the Great War in Bristol, having previously worked as a Compositor in the employ of Messrs L. A. Smart and Son, Gloucester. William Died of Wounds at No.1 Field Ambulance on 16th July 1916, aged 26. He is buried in Meaulte Military Cemetery. The CWGC lists “Husband of Alice Victoria Hutchings, of 60, Stratton Rd., Gloucester”. His commanding officer, Capt W H Powell wrote to his widow – “You will have the satisfaction of knowing that your husband was with me at the time he was shot, and proved himself a brave man by laying telephone cables under very heavy rifle fire. He was one of my best telephonists, and proved himself a jolly good soldier. I am very sorry indeed, having lost one of my best men. I hope that you will keep a good heart, and remember that your husband died for his country during a very fierce battle, which is still raging.”

3476 Rfn Edgar Jacob 21 Bn (First Surrey Rifles) London Regiment. Edgar was born in Sherborne and resided in Camberwell. He had been a pre-war territorial soldier, having enlisted at Camberwell in 1909. However, he was struck off in 1912 as an absentee, having missed two years of annual training. Edgar married Sarah Annie Foot in June 1905 at Sherborne and they went on to have 4 sons. When he re-enlisted for the Great War in April 1915, he stated that he’d previously served with the 4th Dorsets and made no mention that he’d served with the 21st London Regiment, who he was re-joining! On his original enlistment in 1909, he’d made no mention of previous service with the 4th Dorsets. By June 1915 he had been promoted to L/Cpl within the 3/21st London Regiment and in October 1915 was transferred to the 1/21st London Regiment, joining them in France. In November 1915, he reverted back to Rifleman at his own request. Edgar was Killed in Action on 4th May 1916, aged 29. He is buried in Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery, Souchez. The CWGC lists “Son of George and Julia Jacob, of Sherborne, Dorset; husband of Sarah Annie Hall (formerly Jacob), of 10, Alfred St., Blandford, Dorset”.

23868 Pte Thomas Johnston 1 Garrison Bn Hampshire Regiment, formerly 12878 Pte Dorset Regiment. Thomas was born in Horsington, Somerset and resided in Sherborne. He enlisted for the Great War in Taunton. In 1904, he married Florence Stacey in Sherborne and they went on to have a daughter. Thomas was Killed in Action on 28th April 1918, aged 35. He is buried in Ste. Marie Cemetery, Le Harve. The CWGC lists “Son of James Johnston, of Horsington, Somerset; husband of Florence Johnston, of Greenhill, Sherborne, Dorset”.

40012 Pte Edward Jupe 7th Hussars. Edward was born in Winchester and resided in Sherborne. Edward married Lilly Hannah Hunt in November 1904 at Sherborne. They went on to have three children together. He enlisted for the Great War in June 1916 at Sherborne. Initially he joined the 2nd Reserve Regiment of Cavalry before being posted to the 7th Hussars in March 1917. Edward died of Heatstroke at Simla, India on 22nd June 1918, aged 39. He is buried in Meerut Cantonment Cemetery. The CWGC lists “Husband of Lily Hannah Jupe, of Cold Harbour, Sherborne, Dorset”.

30795 Pte Wilfred Keates 2 Bn Devonshire Regiment. Wilfred was born and resided in Sherborne. He enlisted for the Great War in Sherborne too. Wilfred married Eva Hannah Gray at Lydlinch, Dorset in August 1915 and they went on to have a daughter. Wilfred was Killed in Action on 31st July 1917, aged 24. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial to the missing. Harry was Killed in Action in Mesopotamia on 15th August 1916, aged 21. He is commemorated on the Basra Memorial. The CWGC lists “Son of Henry and Mary Ann Lambert, of 320, North Wootton, Sherborne, Dorset”.

20409 Pte Reginald Lambert 2/1 Bucks Bn Ox & Bucks Light Infantry. Reginald was born and resided in Sherborne. He enlisted for the Great War at Llanelly in March 1916. Reginald died of a severe asthma attack at a Casualty Clearing Station on 18th January 1917, aged 27. He is buried in Puchevillers British Cemetery. The CWGC lists “Son of Hezekiah and the late Susan Lambert, of Sherborne, Dorset”. A Chaplain wrote to his family – “I laid his body to rest in the Cemetery here, where so many of his fellow soldiers lie buried. In spite of your sorrow, you must feel proud that you have given your son to make the great sacrifice, for though he has died of sickness, he has given his life for his country just the same as the man who is killed in action.“

7219 L/Cpl Horace Mainham Lawson 2 Bn Irish Guards. Horace was born in Kettering, Northampton and resided in Shirley, Hampshire. In early 1915, he’d been a lodger at 66 Wingfield Road, Sherborne. He enlisted for the Great War in Sherborne in late March to early April 1915. Horace was Killed in Action on 27th September 1915. He is commemorated on the Loos Memorial. Horace served in the same battalion as Rudyard Kipling’s son Jack, both being killed on the same day.

215202 Able Seaman Charles Loader HMS Niger. Charles was born on 27th September 1885 at Sherborne. He married Lucy Maude Richards in January 1913 at Sherborne. Charles was a pre-war Sailor in the Royal Navy, having joined as a Boy in 1901. Charles was Killed in Action on 11th November 1914 when HMS Niger was sunk by German U-Boat SM U-12. He is commemorated on Portsmouth Naval Memorial. His brother is also on the Sherborne War Memorial, see next entry.

10563 Deck Hand Arthur Edwin Loader HM Trawler Ben Glas (Royal Naval Reserve). Arthur was born on 22nd January 1898 at Sherborne. Arthur died of disease on 21st November 1918. 218626 AB Robert Lockett HMS Bulwark. Robert was born on 20th April 1885 at Sherborne. He was a pre-war sailor in the Royal Navy, having joined as a boy in 1902. Richard was Killed on the 26th November 1914 when HMS Bulwark accidentally exploded at Kethole Reach. His body was recovered and buried at Gillingham (Woodlands) Cemetery, Kent. He listed his mother as his next of kin, Fanny who was living in Sherborne.

21534 Shoeing Smith Henry James Lyne 3rd Hussars. Henry was born in Sherborne and resided in Broadclyst, Devon. He enlisted for the Great War in Sherborne. Henry died of Pneumonia on 26th October 1918, aged 30. He is buried in Ste Marie Cemetery, Le Harve. The CWGC lists “Son of James and Susan Lyne, of Sherborne, Dorset; husband of Lilian Iris Lyne, of Beers Cottage, Broad Clyst, nr. Exeter, Devon”.

2nd Lieut Charles William Lush 11 Bn Royal Warwickshire Regiment. Charles was born and resided in Sherborne. Before the war, he was working as a Clerk for a land agent. Charles was Killed in Action on 14th November 1916, aged 23. He is buried in Euston Road Cemetery, Colincamps. LEADBETTER N.
53475 Sgt Nicholas Leadbetter 107 Sqn Royal Air Force. Nicholas was born in Fleetwood, Lancashire in 1877. In January 1900, he married Alice Jane Griffiths in St Annes, Lytham. He enlisted for the Great War on 8th January 1917, joining the Royal Flying Corps. He had previously been a fish salesman. He was transferred to the Royal Air Force on their formation in April 1918. At this time, the family were living at Cheap Street, Sherborne. Nicholas died of Pneumonia whilst on leave on 18th February 1919. He was buried in Sherborne Cemetery. The CWGC lists “Husband of Alice Jane Leadbetter, of 50, Orchard Rd., St. Anne’s-on-Sea, Lancs”.

K/13846 L-Sto Arthur Martin HMS Vanguard. Arthur was born on 15th May 1893 in Sherborne. As a boy, he had been a member of the Sherborne Abbey Choir, a bugler in the Church Lads Brigade, and a Boy Scout. He was a pre-war sailor in the Royal Navy, having joined in March 1912. Arthur was Killed on 9th July 1917, aged 24, when HMS Vanguard suffered a series of huge internal explosions, sinking almost immediately. His body was not recovered. Arthur is commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial. The CWGC lists “Son of Charles and Edith Martin, of 156, Lower Acreman St., Sherborne, Dorset”.

9990 L/Sgt Isaac Martin 5 Bn Dorset Regiment. Isaac was born and resided in Sherborne. In December 1903 he married Mabel Dyke in Sherborne and they went on to have 6 children together. He enlisted for the Great War in Dorchester. Isaac was Killed in Action at Gallipoli on 21st August 1915. He is commemorated on the Helles Memorial.

AB Sidney Sherring Martin SS Treveal. Sidney was born and resided in Sherborne. Sidney was killed on 4th February 1918, aged 21 when SS Treveal sunk by a German U-Boat. He is commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial. The CWGC lists “Son of Stephen and Louisa Ann Martin, of 18, Simons Rd., Sherborne Rd., Dorset”.

12738 Pte Albert Edward Matthews 6 Bn Dorset Regiment. Albert resided in Sherborne. He enlisted for the Great War at Dorchester in January 1915. Before the war, he had worked as a farm labourer. Albert Died of Wounds on 6th November 1915, aged 25. He is buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery. The CWGC lists “Son of W. J. and E. J. Matthews, of 8, Ludbourne Rd., Sherborne, Dorset”.

McENERY J. A.
Capt John Aloysius McEnery 54 Field Coy Royal Engineers. John was born on 23rd December 1877 at Cerne Abbas. He resided in Sherborne and attended Sherborne School before commissioning into the Royal Engineers in December 1896. In 1903 he took part in the Tibet Expedition, where he was mentioned in despatches. John was accidentally Killed on 26th October 1914 when he was shot by a British sentry. Although given a burial at the time, this was subsequently lost and he is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial to the missing.

METEYARD W.
9898 Cpl William George Meteyard 1 Bn Dorset Regiment. William was born in Yenston, Somerset and resided in Sherborne. He enlisted for the Great War in Dorchester on 12th August 1914. Before the war, he had been working as a gardner. William was quickly promoted to L/Cpl in January 1915 and then again to Cpl in June 1915. He originally served with the 5th Battalion and went to Gallipoli with them. It was here he was wounded by a bullet to the scalp on 21st August 1915. On recovery, he was transferred to the 1st Battalion in January 1916. William was Killed in Action on 9th July 1916. He has no known grave and is now commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the missing on the Somme.

MILLER E.
3/8779 Pte Enock Miller 1 Bn Dorset Regiment. Enock was born in Sherborne and resided in Burpham, Sussex. In March 1909, he married Eunice Reed at Emsworth and they went on to have two daughters together. He enlisted for the Great War at Chichester, Sussex in December 1914. He had previously served as a regular soldier in the Dorset Regiment. Enock was present at Hill 60 on the 1st May 1915 when the 1st Dorsets were gassed in one of the first of such attacks of this new form of warfare. Enock died from gas poisoning on 4th May 1915. He is buried in Perth Cemetery (China Wall).

MITCHELL H.
200222 Sgt Harry Mitchell D.C.M. 1/4 Bn Dorset Regiment, attached Dunsterforce. Harry was born in Coombe, Sherborne and had attended Christ’s Hospital School in Horsham. He enlisted for the Great War in Sherborne. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for his part in the battle of Ramadi. His citation reads “For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty at Ramadi, on 28th September 1917. During a long and exhausting battle he worked unceasingly, keeping his men alert and directing their fire at a critical time. On the following day he went out in charge of a patrol and sent back valuable information of the enemy’s movements.” Harry Died of Wounds on 10th September 1918, aged 23. He is buried in Tehran War Cemetery. The CWGC lists “Son of Thomas and Emily Mitchell, of 7, Coombe Terrace, Sherborne, Dorset”.

20043 Pte Charles Frederick Morley 3 Bn Worcestershire Regiment. Charles was born in Sherborne. He enlisted for the Great War at Ashford, Kent in November 1914. He had previously served as a regular soldier in the Worcestershire Regiment from 1900 to 1912. Charles was Killed in Action on 26th August 1916, aged 32. He has no known grave and is now commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the missing on the Somme.

6482 Pte Sydney Maggs Grey 1 Bn Dorset Regiment, formerly 16896 Royal Horse Artillery. Sydney was born in Marylebone, London and resided in Kilburn, London. He was a pre war regular soldier, having enlisted in London on 29th April 1901. Before enlisting, he had worked as a boot clicker. Sydney had left the army and transferred to the reserve sometime prior to 1914. After leaving the army, he worked for the Post Office as a porter. In April 1913 he married Anna Maria Spicer in Upper Tooting, London. They went on to have a son together. Sydney was re-called for war service in August 1914. It is likely that Sidney spent sometime in Sherborne before the war. Sydney was Killed in Action on 15th September 1914, aged 38. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the La Ferte-Sous-Jouarre Memorial. The CWGC lists “Son of the late Edward Gray; husband of Anna Maria Gray, of 87, Hartland Rd., Kilburn, London”.

B/19859 Pte Ronald Milsom Nash 2 Bn Royal Fusiliers. Ronald was born and resided in Sherborne. He enlisted for the Great War at St Paul’s, London, having previously worked at Lloyds Bank, Gillingham. Ronald was Killed in Action on 4th June 1918, aged 21. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial. 12388 L/Cpl John Thomas Newton 5 Bn Dorset Regiment. John was born in Barlings, Lincoln and had previously resided at Doddington, Lincoln. By 1911, he was living and working in Sherborne as a gardener at Sherborne Castle. John enlisted for the Great War at Sherborne in November 1914. In February 1915 he was promoted to L/Cpl. John was Killed in Action (Missing) at Gallipoli on 21st August 1915. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Helles Memorial.

106 Pte William Norman 1/1 Dorset Yeomanry. William was born and resided in Sherborne. He was a pre war territorial soldier serving with the Dorset Yeomanry at Sherborne. William was Killed in Action at the Charge at Agagia, on the 26th February 1916, aged 26. It was one of the last great cavalry charges made by the British Army. William is also remembered on our Agagia Roll of Honour. He is buried in Alexandria (Chatby) Military and War Cemetery.

26732 Pte John William Norris 2 Bn Wiltshire Regiment, formerly 17715 Pte Dorset Regiment. John was born in Yeovil and resided in Sherborne. In September 1909 he married Ethel Gosney in Sherborne. They went on to have a daughter together. He enlisted for the Great War in Sherborne. John was Killed in Action on 9th April 1917. However, a letter from his commanding officer stated that he died of wounds received on the 9th April two days later. He is buried in Neuville-Vitasse Road Cemetery.

NOTLEY T.
136495 Cpl William James Notley 5 Bn Canadian Engineers. William was born on 28th February 1890 in Broadmayne. Some time before the Great War, he had emigrated to Canada with his family, settling in Toronto. Before this, he had served for three years in the Territorials, specifically the 4th Dorsets. He enlisted for the Great War at Toronto in October 1915. He originally joined the 74th Battalion and was later transferred to the 37th Battalion in November 1915 to proceed overseas. In arrival in the UK he joined the 12th (Reserve) Battalion but for service in France, he was later transferred to the 2nd Pioneer Battalion in May 1916. He married Elsie May, who resided at Wingfield Road, Sherborne, most likely whilst on leave to the UK in late 1917. On 11th October 1918 William was admitted to No.12 Canadian Field Ambulance with a severe shell wound to the head. He was transferred to 26 General Hospital at Etaples but later died of wounds here on 21st October 1918, aged 27. He is buried in Etaples Military Cemetery. The CWGC lists “Son of John and Charlotte Notley, of Dorset, England”.

66539 L/Cpl Hugh Ogden 24 Signal Coy Royal Engineers. Hugh was born in Newton Heath, Lancashire and resided in Sherborne, having attended Christ Hospital School. He was a pre war territorial with the Dorset Yeomanry, although has originally enlisted in Norwich. Before the war, he had worked at Sherborne Post Office as a clerk. In 1915 he was transferred to the Royal Engineers. Hugh was Killed in Action on 20th June 1917 when an enemy shell fell on the tent he was sleeping in. He is buried in Reninghelst New Military Cemetery.

2 Lieut Sydney Ralph Pragnell 4 Sqn Royal Air Force, formerly Z/1500 AB Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. Sydney was born on 17th October 1898. He enlisted for the Great War in January 1916. His records indicate he may have served on Defensively Armed Merchant Ships (DAMS). He was commissioned into the Royal Naval Air Service as a Probationary Flight Officer in February 1918. He was transferred to the Royal Air Force on their formation in April 1918. Sydney was killed in a flying accident on 10th August 1918, aged 19. He was flying a Sopwith Camel when it lost speed whilst turning at low altitude, causing it to go into a spin and crash. He is buried in Sherborne Cemetery. The CWGC lists “Son of Edward and Helen Pragnell, of The Half Moon Hotel, Sherborne”.

He has been a pre war territorial, having joined the 4th Dorsets in November 1911. He subsequently joined the regular army in December 1912 as 9505 Pte Somerset Light Infantry. In June 1914, he purchased his discharge from the army, only 2 months before the outbreak of war. He subsequently re-enlisted for the Great War in Yeovil. Frank was Killed in Action on 25th September 1915, aged 20. Frank has no known grave and is commemorated on the Loos Memorial. The CWGC lists “Son of Robert Allen Quinton, of 55, Coldharbour, Sherborne, Dorset; husband of R. L. J. Moyse (formerly Quinton), of 17, Campbell Rd., Lower Walmer, Deal, Kent”.

RAWLINGS T.
TS/7230 Saddler Tom Hallett Walter Rawlings No.1 Coy Army Service Corps. Tom was born in Stepney and resided in Child Okeford. He enlisted for the Great War in April 1915 at Dorchester having been a Saddler by trade. In January 1916 he was given 5 days confined to barracks for parading with a dirty rifle. He was discharged from the army as no longer physically fit for war service (suffering from Phthisis) on the 12th June 1916. On leaving the army he went to reside at Chrysanthemum Row, Newland, Sherborne. Tom Died of Bronchial Pneumonia on the 20th July 1916 aged 20 at 3 London General Hospital. He was buried in Sherborne Cemetery on the 24th July 1916. The funeral was conducted by men of the Volunteer Training Corps with full military honours, including the last post, and a firing party who fired 3 volleys. The CWGC lists “Son of Walter and Jane Rawlings, of Alpine Greenhill, Sherborne”. Tom is also commemorated on the Child Okeford War Memorial.

2 Lieut Philip Colin Rawson 1 Bn Royal Berkshire Regiment. Philip was born on 1st June 1896 at Norton-in-Hales, Shropshire. He was commissioned into the Royal Berkshire Regiment in January 1915. Philip was Killed in Action on 25th September 1915, aged 19. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Loos Memorial. The CWGC lists “Son of Philip Heathcote Rawson and L. C. Rawson, of Brecon House, Sherborne, Dorset”.

203290 Gnr Edwin John Rayson 74 Coy Royal Garrison Artillery. Edwin was born in Sherborne. He enlisted for the Great War at Sherborne in August 1914. He had previously served as a regular soldier in the Royal Field Artillery. On enlistment in 1914, he re-joined the Royal Field Artillery, serving with them in France, India and Mesopotamia until being compulsory transferred to the Royal Garrison Artillery in April 1918. Edwin died of appendicitis in Mesopotamia at 133 British General Hospital, Kut on 26 August 1918, aged 42. He is buried in Kut War Cemetery. The CWGC lists “Son of Charles and Eliza Rayson, of Sherborne, Dorset; husband of Florence E. Rayson, of Higher Kingsbury, Milborne Port, Somerset”. His brother is also commemorated on the Sherborne War Memorial, see William Arthur Rayson.

He had previously served as a regular soldier in the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry. William married Sarah Penny at Sherborne in March 1909. They went on to have 4 children together. William was Killed in Action (Missing) on 26th September 1916. He has no known grave and is now commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the missing on the Somme. Harold died of wounds at Evington Military Hospital, Leicester on 11th August 1916, aged 21. He is buried in Sherborne Cemetery. Lieut Charles Benjamin Seymour 11 Sqn Royal Air Force, formerly 9471 Pte Honourable Artillery Company. Charles was born on 20th October 1892 at Newport, Montgomeryshire. He resided at Trindle Street, Sherborne. Charles originally enlisted in the Honourable Artillery Company before being commissioned into the Royal Flying Corps in August 1917. On formation of the Royal Air Force in April 1918, he transferred to them. Charles was Killed in Action on 6th September 1918 when his aircraft (Bristol F2b) was shot down whilst returning from a reconnaissance mission. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Arras Flying Services Memorial.

William was Killed in Action on 30th April 1917, aged 27 when HMS Q12 was sunk by a German U-Boat. He is commemorated on Chatham Naval Memorial. 8729 Cpl Henry Woolmer Stubbings 2 Bn Dorset Regiment. Henry was born in Sherborne. He was a pre war regular soldier, having enlisted at Sherborne in March 1909. He had previously served as a territorial in the Hertfordshire Regiment. The 2nd Battalion were sent to Mesopotamia as part of the Indian Expeditionary Force “D” in November 1914, with Henry along with them. He was taken Prisoner of War at the fall of Kut after months of siege, along with what remained of the shattered 2nd Battalion and Indian Expeditionary Force “D”. It was whilst a Prisoner of War he died in Turkish hands in hospital of dysentery on on 27th August 1916, aged 28. He is buried in Baghdad (North Gate) Cemetery. The CWGC lists “Son of Mr. J. W. and Mrs. V. J. Stubbings, of North Rd., Sherborne, Dorset”.

307871 Pte Herbert Harry Sturgess 1/8 Bn Royal Warwickshire Regiment. Herbert was born in Sherborne and resided in Burnham, Somerset. He enlisted for the Great War under the Derby Scheme at Burnham in December 1915. He was called up for service in May 1916, having previously worked as a grocers manager. Herbert was Killed in Action on 27th August 1917. He is buried in Poelcapelle British Cemetery. His next of kin was listed as his mother, Emily Sturgess of King’s Road, Sherborne.

T/1450 S/Sgt Percy Lionel Taylor Army Ordnance Corps, Attached 431 Siege Battery Royal Garrison Artillery, formerly 1140 Pte Dorset Yeomanry. Percy was born in Sherborne on 30th November 1893. He resided in Sherborne and was educated at Foster’s School. He enlisted for the Great War in Woolwich, London and originally joined the Dorset Yeomanry. Before the war, he was an engineers apprentice at Messrs Petter’s, Yeovil. Percy served with the Yeomanry at Gallipoli but was invalid home in December 1915. He transferred to the Army Ordnance Corps in February 1917. Percy died of tetanus at No.21 Casualty Clearing Station on 3rd July 1918, aged 25. He is buried in Wavans British Cemetery. The CWGC lists “Croix de Guerre (France). Son of J. Newman Taylor and Marian Taylor, of Ballinora, Sherborne, Dorset”. The battery commander wrote of Percy – “On behalf of the officers and men under my command, offer to you our most heartfelt sympathy in your terrible loss. In his death we have lost a true and good friend. His work was beyond all praise; nothing was ever too much trouble for him. It was certainly through him that one of our guns was saved on 30 Nov. 1917, in Gouzeaucourt , and again in this last retreat he worked untiringly. You can rest assured that his grave will not be left unattended by his battery friends and comrades.” Another officer of the battery wrote – “He was the best and bravest man in the battery. It was certainly owing to his great work that we were able to save both our guns at Gouzeaucourt. He was a personal friend of all the officers, and myself particularly, and most popular with the men.” His brother is also commemorated on Sherborne War Memorial, see Sidney Harold Taylor.

2 Lieut Sidney Harold Taylor 3 Bn Attached 1 Bn Dorset Regiment, formerly 327 L/Cpl Dorset Yeomanry. Sidney was born at Sherborne on 9th August 1889. He resided in Sherborne and was educated at Foster’s School. Sidney was the assistant manager at Sherborne Gas Works, was Captain of the Sherborne Football Team and on the Cricket Team. Additionally, he was a member of the town Fire Brigade, a Lieutenant in the Church Lads Brigade and a Scoutmaster. In 1910, he was awarded the Scout’s Medal of Merit for stopping a run-away horse and cart, in which a woman and child were driving. He was a pre war territorial with the Dorset Yeomanry, having enlisted at Sherborne in January 1909. After serving at Gallipoli and returning to the UK suffering from Rheumatism, Sidney was discharged from the army in April 1916 as his period of service finished and he wanted to apply for a commission. He was commissioned into the Dorset Regiment in January 1917, proceeding to France in February 1917. Sidney was Killed in Action on 4th April 1917, aged 27. He is buried in Chapelle British Cemetery, Holnon. The CWGC lists “Son of J. Newman Taylor and Marian Taylor, of “Ballinora,” Sherborne, Dorset”. The Adjutant of the 1st Dorsets wrote – “Your son’s platoon had to attack a copse held by the Germans; it was a night attack, and a very difficult job to do; the German’s didn’t much want to leave the place, and they opened a pretty heavy fire until your son’s platoon got up close to them, and then they bolted. It could not have been better organized, and it needed a man with a lot of guts to run it. It was absolutely rotten luck that your son should get hit, but he couldn’t have died a finer death, could he?” His brother is also commemorated on Sherborne War Memorial, see Percy Lionel Taylor.

3/8065 Pte Reginald James Thomas 1 Bn Dorset Regiment. Reginald was born in Sherborne. He enlisted for the Great War in Sherborne and had previously served as a regular soldier, having enlisted in February 1901 and discharged in 1909. Reginald was present at Hill 60 on the 1st May 1915 when the 1st Dorsets were gassed in one of the first of such attacks of this new form of warfare. Reginald died from gas poisoning on 3rd May 1915, aged 31. He is buried in Hazebrouck Communal Cemetery. The CWGC lists “Son of Robert Daniel and Mary Jane Thomas, of Sherborne, Dorset”.

Lieut Austin Ears Vincent Z Bty 91 Brigade Royal Field Artillery, formerly 1072 Pte West Somerset Yeomanry. Austin was born in Sherborne and resided at Acreman Street, Sherborne. He originally served with the West Somerset Yeomanry and the Somerset Light Infantry. He commissioned into the Royal Field Artillery in January 1917. In 1918 he married Evelyn Ruth Turner. Austin was Killed in Action on 8th November 1918, aged 23. He is buried in Cross Roads Cemetery, Fontaine-Au-Bois. The CWGC lists “Son of Tom and Annie Eliza Vincent, of Rydal Tower, Sherborne, Dorset; husband of Evelyn R. Vincent, of 36, Swinburne Rd., Darlington”.
VIZARD H. J.
Captain Harold Talbot Vizard MC & 2 Bars A Bty 121 Brigade Royal Field Artillery. Harold was born in Penlyne, Glamorganshire on 21st February 1896. He resided in Sherborne and had attended Sherborne School. Harold commissioned into the Royal Field Artillery in October 1914. In April 1916 he was awarded the Military Cross for “conspicuous courage and devotion to duty. A gunpit containing 60 shells having been set alight, Lieutenant Vizard with great initiative, removed the ammunition from the pit and handed it to one of the men of his battery outside. He remained in the pit till the fire was extinguished and performed the removal of the ammunition under heavy shell fire.” He gained a bar (second award) to this in November 1916. The citation reads – “For conspicuous gallantry in action. He reorganised some men and led them forward in a bombing attack, displaying great courage at a critical time.” In January 1918 he was awarded a second bar (third award) to his Military Cross. The third citation states – “For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when liaison officer with an infantry battalion. Hearing cries for help coming from a derelict tank, he accompanied the medical officer through heavy barrage and concentrated machine-gun fire and, having found a badly wounded Highlander, they dressed his wounds and-carried him into a place of safety amidst a hail of shell and machine-gun fire. No praise can be too great for this splendid act of fearlessness and devotion.” Harold was Killed in Action by a bomb splinter from an aircraft on 1st September 1918, aged 22. He is buried in Faubourg D’Amiens Cemetery, Arras. The CWGC lists “Son of Mrs. Hilda Vizard, of Stavordale Priory, Wincanton, Somerset, and the late Willie Vizard. Born at Sherborne, Dorset”.

2 Lieut Edmund John Waldegrave D Bty 286 Brigade Royal Field Artillery. Edmund was born in Eccleston Park, Lancashire on 10th May 1899. He was educated at Sherborne Prepartory School, before attending Marlborough College. Edmund resided at St Aidens Cottage, Sherborne. He was commissioned into the Royal Field Artillery in May 1918. Edmund was Killed in Action on 10th August 1918, aged 19. He is buried in Anzin-St. Aubin British Cemetery. The CWGC lists “Son of the Rev. Samuel Edmund Waldegrave and Alice Waldegrave, of Poyntington, Sherborne, Dorset. Captain of Marlborough College,”. His commanding officer wrote – “He had only been with us a short time, but his open character and charm endeared him to us all. He was a most promising officer, and I had already forwarded his name to the General for a good piece of work.” His house master from Marlborough wrote – “It is impossible to speak too highly of his efficiency and general conduct, and the high tone he had set has had the most marked effect.”

7870 2AM Samuel John Wells Royal Flying Corps. Samuel was born and resided in Sherborne. He enlisted for the Great War at Dorchester in August 1915. In 1916, Samuel was taken prisoner of war at the fall of Kut, Mesopotamia in April 1916. Samuel died at Angora, Mesopotamia whilst prisoner of war on 20th September 1916, aged 20. He is buried in Baghdad (North Gate) Cemetery. The CWGC lists “Son of Mr. S. and Mrs. C. M. Wells, of 14, Wingfield Rd., Sherborne, Dorset”. Sgt Major G Bellis of the Royal Engineers (a fellow prisoner) wrote to his parents – “I write you these few lines, it being my painful duty to inform you of the death of your son, Second Class Airman S. J. Wells, Royal Flying Corps, which occurred at Angora.“

77253 2AM Percival George Welsman “T” Aeroplane Acceptance Park Royal Air Force Formerly TR8/16887 37 Training Reserve Bn and Royal Flying Corps. Percival was born in Sherborne in 1890. He enlisted for the Great War in February 1917. On the formation of the RAF in April 1918, Percival transferred across from the RFC. He had married Sybil at Wimborne in February 1916. Percival was Killed in a flying accident at Coventry on the 24th September 1918. He is buried in Wimborne Minster Cemetery. Also remembered on Wimborne War Memorial and Colehill War Memorial.

RMA/10382 Gnr Robert John West Royal Marine Artillery HMS Hogue. Robert was born in Sherborne on 7th October 1884. He was a pre war Marine in the Royal Marine Artillery, having enlisted at Yeovil in January 1903. Robert was Killed in Action on 22nd September 1914, aged 30 when HMS Hogue was sunk by a German U-Boat. His body was not recovered and he is now commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial. The CWGC lists “Son of the late Frank and Mary Jane West, of Sherborne, Dorset”.

He married Rose Florence Travers at Weymouth in 1910 and they went on to have three children together. He enlisted for the Great War in Rugby, Warwickshire. Cecil was Killed in Action on 4th May 1917. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial. After the war, his widow and children resided at Long Street, Sherborne.

8842 Pte James Henry Wood 2 Bn Dorset Regiment. James was born in Marchwood, Hampshire and resided in Sherborne. He was a pre war regular soldier, having enlisted at Dorchester in October 1909. Before this, he had served with the 3rd Dorsets (Special Reserve). James was found guilty of firing a blank round whilst on parade in 1910 and was confined to camp for 5 days as punishment. Two months later he was punished again, this time for having a dirty rifle on parade, earning him 3 days confined to barracks. 6 months later James was confined to barracks for another 3 days for shirking his work in the barrack room. He then moved to India, but still managed to find himself in trouble. In December 1912 he was found to have allowed his rifle to become corroded, warranting 7 days confined to camp. Whilst under this punishment, he was given an additional 3 days confinement for being late on defaulters parade. The 2nd Battalion were sent to Mesopotamia as part of the Indian Expeditionary Force “D” in November 1914, with James along with them. In October 1914, he was wounded in the knee and thigh at Saniyah. In July 1915 he was admitted to the field ambulance suffering from Malaria. He was taken Prisoner of War at the fall of Kut after months of siege, along with what remained of the shattered 2nd Battalion and Indian Expeditionary Force “D”. It was whilst a Prisoner of War he died of dysentery in Turkish hands on 15th June 1916, aged 25. He is commemorated on the Basra Memorial, having originally been buried in Mosul Prisoner of War Cemetery. His parents received a letter from the Agence Internationale des Prisonniers de Guerre – “We feel that any words of ours must prove very inadequate at such a time, but we trust that it maybe some light consolation to you in your sorrow to know that from the signature at the end of the above mentioned it is evident that Private Harry Woods received as much medical care and attention as was possible under the circumstances from one of his own countrymen, and also that his last moments were passed in the presence of familiar comrades who had shared, we may suppose, at least some of the weeks of his captivity with him at Mossoul. Will you allow me to express our sincere sympathy with you in your sad loss and our deep regret that your anxiety should end in so sad a manner?” His brother is also commemorated on Sherborne War Memorial, see Arthur George Wood.
