LIONEL HENRY CARVER
2 Lieut Lionel Henry Liptrap Carver 1 Bn Irish Guards. Lionel was born on the 16th October 1883 in Melbury Abbas. He was educated at St John’s School, Leatherhead and Jesus College, Cambridge. In September 1906 he started work for the Burma Trading Corporation Ltd. His home was at Hatchlea Ockley, Surrey. After war had broken out, he joined the Moulmein Volunteer Rifles in July 1915. He returned to the UK in March 1917, and commissioned into the Irish Guards that October. He proceeded overseas to join his Battalion on the 17th December 1917. Lionel was Killed in Action around Arras on the 26th May 1918. He is buried in Ayette British Cemetery. His Commanding Officer wrote of him “I can’t tell you what a loss your son is to the battalion. He was quite my best junior officer – he never failed me in anything I asked him to do. He was keen, thorough and energetic in all his work, and he was rapidly acquiring the knowledge that would have made him a first-class leader”. The Bombay Burmah Trading Corporation wrote “It is a very difficult matter to express in any way adequately the loss that the Corporation has sustained by his death, as his natural ability and unlimited capacity for work had long ago made it a certainty that he would eventually fill the highest position that the Corporation could offer him with the greatest distinction and credit”.
7833 Pte Albert Conway 2 Bn Dorset Regiment. Albert was born in Farnham and resided in Melbury Abbas. He was a pre war regular soldier and enlisted at Shaftesbury. The 2nd Battalion were sent to Mesopotamia as part of the Indian Expeditionary Force “D” in November 1914, with Albert along with them. Albert was Killed in Action on the 14th April 1915 in Mesopotamia. He is buried in Basra War Cemetery.
ALBERT EDWIN HARDIMAN
18964 Pte Albert Edwin Hardiman 1 Bn Dorset Regiment. Albert was born and resided in Melbury Abbas. He enlisted for the Great War in Shaftesbury. Albert was Killed in Action on the 6th April 1917 aged 19. He is buried in Chapelle British Cemetery, Holnon. The CWGC lists “Son of John and Kezia Hardiman, of Melbury Abbas, Shaftesbury”.
73046 Pte William Mark Henstridge 4 Company Machine Gun Corps, formerly 12701 Pte Dorset Regiment. William was born in Shaftesbury. He enlisted for the Great War in Shaftesbury too. William was Killed in Action on the 2nd April 1917 aged 20. He has no known grave and is now commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the missing on the Somme. The CWGC lists “Son of Mr. W. G. and Mrs. E. E. Henstridge, of Melbury Abbas, Shaftesbury. Dorset”.
JOHN DENNIS RIGGS
1180 Pte John Dennis Riggs Dorset Yeomanry. John enlisted for the Great War in Shaftesbury. John was Killed in Action at Gallipoli on the 21st August 1915 aged 27. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Helles Memorial. The CWGC lists “Son of John and Fannie Riggs, of Tollard Royal, Salisbury; husband of Alice R. Riggs, of Hillside, Manswood, Wimborne”.
