860594 Dvr Frederick Charles Ackerman A/217 Brigade, 1091st Battery Royal Field Artillery. Frederick resided at East Street, Beaminster and later moved to 190 Eaton Cottages, St Andrews Road, Bridport. He was disembodied from the army on the 15th December 1919.

45751 Pte Herbert Edward Ackerman 5 Bn and 16 Bn King’s Royal Rifle Corps. Herbert resided at St Mary’s Street, Beaminster.


PTE S. E. ACKERMAN

623045 Pte Sidney Ernest Ackerman 2/19 London Regiment, formerly 31795 Pte 1/4 Norfolk Regiment, 30096 Pte 2/4 Dorset Regiment and 85029 Pte Royal Army Medical Corps. Sidney was a Butcher’s Assistant and resided at High Street, Beaminster. He enlisted for the Great War with the Royal Army Medical Corps in Bridport in October 1916. In February 1918, he was transferred to the 2/4th Dorset Regiment and in September 1918 to the 1/4 Norfolk Regiment. In October 1919 he was again transferred, this time to the Middlesex Regiment, being immediately posted to the 2/19th London Regiment.


SERGT T. ACKERMAN

25026 L/Sgt Thomas Ackerman 4 Bn South Wales Borderers. Thomas resided at East Street, Beaminster. During his service, he suffered from Malaria. He was discharged from the army on the 22nd May 1919.


PTE J. ACKERMAN

44411 Pte Jesse Ackerman 3 Bn Dorset Regiment. Jesse was born in 1897 and was a Baker residing at East Street, Beaminster. He enlisted for the Great War in Dorchester in May 1918 but wasn’t graded fit enough for frontline service. As such, he didn’t serve overseas. He was discharged from the army in March 1919.


DR S. ADKINS

52282 Dvr Stephen Adkins 22 Brigade Ammunition Column Royal Field Artillery. Stephen was born in Greater Bourton, Oxford. He resided at North Street and later Fleet Street, Beaminster. Stephen has been a pre war regular soldier, enlisting in October 1908 at Canterbury. He had previously served in the Queen’s Own Oxfordshire Hussars. During the war he served with a number of units including 104 Battery, 106 Battery, A/159 Brigade and finally with C Battery, Royal Horse Artillery. He was discharged from the army in February 1919. During the war, he had married Elsie E May Dunscombe, in July 1917.


PTE A. C. ALLEN

Archibald Cooper Allen was born in June 1883 in Stratton, near Dorchester. He joined the Royal Navy in May 1901 serving until April 1908 when he was discharged. In the 1911 Census, he was residing at the Sun Inn, Beaminster. It would appear he moved to the Lutterworth area of Leicestershire soon after, but no details of wartime service have yet been found.


PTE H. J. ALLEN

M2/021477 Pte Hedley John Allen 384th MT Company Army Service Corps. Hedley was a Motor Lorry Driver and resided at East Street, Beaminster. He enlisted for the Great War in London in December 1914, having previously served 4 years in the 4th Dorsets (Territorials). Within a week he had been posted to France to join the GHQ Troops on the Lines of Communications. In September 1918 he married Mabel Annie Swaffield in Beaminster. Hedley died on the 22nd November 1963.


CORPL T. H. ALLEN

83020 Cpl Vandelow Hobman Allen Royal Army Medical Corps. Vandelow was a solicitor’s clerk and resided at Hogshill Street, Beaminster. In December 1915, he married Equilla Marian Hansford in Beaminster. After the war he moved to Lyme Regis and became a photographer and then an Estate Agent. Vandelow died on the 14th March 1953.


GNR G. AITCHISON

6286 Gnr George Aitchison Royal Marine Artillery. George was born in Ayr on the 28th September 1896 in Glasgow. He enlisted for the Royal Marine Artillery in September 1896. He served for the majority of the war onboard HMS Superb. In October 1914, he married Clara Elliott in Beaminster. They resided at Prout Cottage, Beaminster. George was finally discharged in May 1919 after 23 years service. George died in 1936 and is buried in Beaminster.


PTE G. BACON

T/439505 Pte Frederick George Bacon L Supply Company Army Service Corps. Frederick resided at Church Street, Beaminster. In April 1907, he married Mary Ann Staple in Beaminster. He enlisted for the Great War at Dorchester in August 1918, aged 50. He had previously served with the 3rd Dorsets for 6 years. Frederick was discharged from the army in April 1919, having not served overseas. Frederick died in 1954 and is buried in Beaminster.


SERGT E. P. BAILEY

201143 (2916) L/Sgt Edwin Parker Bailey 1/4 Bn Dorset Regiment. Edwin was born in Beaminster on the 30th April 1890. He resided at Hogshill Street, Beaminster. He was disembodied from service on the 20th March 1919. He married Ethel Hollis on the 13th April 1919 and they continued to live in Beaminster where Edwin worked as a Solicitors Clerk. Edwin died on 16th May 1965 and is buried in Beaminster.


PTE W. J. BAILEY

83021 Pte William John Bailey 37 Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps. William resided at Hogshill Street, Beaminster. He married Sylvia Victoria White on the 2nd August 1921 in Beaminster. They continued to live in Beaminster, where William worked as a builder. William died in 1966, being cremated in Weymouth, before his ashes were buried in Beaminster.


PTE E. J. BALDRY

S/308846 Dvr Edward James Baldry 834 HT Company Army Service Corps. Edward was born in Norwich on the 3rd March 1894. He was working as a schoolmaster in Beaminster before being conscripted in March 1917. He had been registered as an external student of the University of London in May 1915. He was discharged from the army on the 14th March 1919, having served in France from August 1918 to February 1919. He returned to Beaminster after the war, residing at the Grammar school for sometime. By 1939, he was living in Great Yarmouth. Edward died on the 2nd January 1979 in Lincolnshire.


GNR J. BARRETT

91595 Gnr James Barrett 60th Siege Battery Royal Garrison Artillery. James resided at The Lodge, Southgate, Beaminster and worked as a Butler at Parnham House. He married Sarah Jane Mellor in December 1907 and they had two children, Joseph and Evelyn. He joined under the Derby Scheme in late 1915, being then called up in June 1916. He was discharged from the army in October 1919. By 1939 he was working as a postman in Beaminster.


LT CPR H. BARCLAY

10503 L/Cpl Henry Barclay 5 Bn Dorset Regiment. Henry was born on the 2nd April 1892 and resided at the Bell and Crown Inn, Beaminster where he was the Inn Keeper. He was wounded at Gallipoli by a gunshot to the right thigh. Due to this wound, he was discharged from the army in June 1916. He married Rosa Ellen Norris on the 28th April 1917. Henry died on the 28th September 1956 in Beaminster.

2nd Lieut William Oliver Beament General List, formerly Cadet, Cambridge University OTC. William was commissioned on the 28th May 1916 into the General List, for service with the Dean Close School Contingent, Officer Training Corps.


PTE J. BERNEY *

2010 Pte John Newman Berney 1/4 Bn Dorset Regiment, formerly 1421 Pte Royal West Surrey Regiment. John was born in Tooting and resided in Stoughton, Surrey. He had previously worked as a postman in Beaminster. He enlisted for the Great War in Guildford. John died of cholera in Mespotamia on the 20th August 1916 aged 21. He is buried in Basra War Cemetery. The CWGC lists “Son of Mortimer B. and Florence A. Berney, of 2, Mizpah Villas, North Rd., Stoughton, Guildford”.


PTE E. BEVISS

19889 Pte Ernest James Beviss 5 Bn Dorset Regiment. Ernest was born on the 1st June 1896 in Beaminster and at the time of the Great War, resided at St Mary’s Street, Beaminster. He enlisted for the Great War at Bridport in November 1915, aged 19. Ernest was a Butcher by trade and it was because of this he initially joined the Army Service Corps. He arrived in France at the end of April 1917, but was soon transferred to the Dorset Regiment a few weeks later and joined the 5th Battalion. On 5th October 1917 he was wounded in action, receiving a gunshot wound to the head and right thigh. He made a quick recovery, and re-joined the battalion a month later. On the 1st October 1918, Ernest was once again wounded, this time receiving a shell wound to the right knee and was evacuated to the UK where he went to Cambridge Military Hospital, Aldershot. On recovery he was sent to the Military Convalescent Hospital at Eastbourne, before returning to his Regiment at Wyke Regis. It was whilst stationed at Wyke Regis he was deprived a days pay in December 1918 for overstaying his leave pass by 18 hours. Ernest was discharged from the Army in 1919. He died in 1974, aged 78.


CAPT F. E. BISHOP D.S.O.

Capt Frederick Edward Bishop D.S.O. 3 Bn Bedfordshire Regiment, Attached Middlesex Regiment Depot, Mill Hill Barracks. Frederick resided at Woodswater Cottage, Beaminster. Frederick was born in Secunderabad, India. He was commissioned into the Bedfordshire Regiment on the 25th February 1891. In 1896, he was attached to the Gold Coast Constabulary as the Assistant Inspector. By 1900 he was now a Captain with the 1st Battalion Gold Coast Regiment, and became besieged by the Ashantis in the fort at Kumasi. When a break out was organised, Frederick was chosen to command the small garrison left behind under siege and was subsequently wounded. For this work, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order. In 1906, he was appointed travelling commissioner of the Northern Territories of the Gold Coast, before returning to the UK in 1908. He was attached to the Middlesex Regiment Depot during the Great War, but also spent periods with the 3rd and 9th Battalions Bedfordshire Regiment. He died aged 59 at Beaminster in 1931.


GNR G. W. BOON

860505 Gnr George Wallace Boon 3rd Wessex Brigade, Royal Field Artillery TF. His original number was 2626. George was born on the 25th January 1894 at Beaminster, and at the time of the Great War, resided at Newtown, Beaminster. After the war he married Florence Ethel Rendell at Beaminster in February 1924. In civilian life, George worked as a dairy farmer. He died in October 1964 at Beaminster aged 70. His brother is also on the Beaminster War Memorial, see Pte S J Boon.


PTE S. J. BOON

63213 Gnr Sidney John Boon 49 Company Royal Garrison Artillery. Sidney was born in Beaminster on the 29th September 1896. He enlisted for the Great War on the 6th November 1915. He was discharged from the Army (having not served overseas) on the 21st September 1916 due to valvular disease of the heart. In mid 1916 he had married Kate A Watts in Yeovil and they resided at 5 Crofton Avenue, Yeovil. Sidney died on the 14th November 1973 aged 77 at Farlington, Hampshire. His brother is also on the Beaminster War Memorial, see Gnr G W Boon.


GNR W. G. BOON

860503 Gnr William George Boon 3rd Wessex Brigade, Royal Field Artillery TF. His original number was 2624. William was born in Beaminster on the 4th November 1895. At the time of the Great War, he resided at Hurst, Beaminster. In 1921, he married Winifred M S Francis in Bridport. By 1939 the family were living at North Allington, Bridport.


LIEUT C. E. BOWDITCH

Lieut Clement Edgar Bowditch Indian Army Reserve of Officers, formerly 2229 Cpl 1/4 Bn Dorset Regiment. Clement was born in Beaminster in 1892. At the time of the Great War, he resided at North Street, Beaminster and worked as a solicitors clerk. He originally served as a soldier with the 4th Dorsets, before being commissioned into the Indian Army Reserve of Officers on the 30th September 1917.

31683 L/Cpl Philip Dicker 1 Bn Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry, formerly 17284 Pte Dorset Regiment. Philip was born in Bridport and attended Beaminster Grammar School. He enlisted for the Great War on 4th April 1916 in Bridgwater, Somerset, having previously worked as a draper’s assistant. He proceeded to the Western Front on the 19th July 1916 and became am member of the Lewis Gun section. Philip was wounded by a shell on the 6th November and Died of these Wounds at No.2 Canadian Casualty Clearing Station on the 8th November 1917 aged 28. He is buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery. The CWGC lists “Son of William George and Laura Charlotte Dicker, of London House, Beaminster, Dorset. Born at Bridport, Dorset”.

1488 Pte Percy Victor John Dunn 1/1st Dorset Yeomanry. Percy was born and resided in Beaminster. He enlisted for the Great War in Sherborne. Percy was Killed in Action at the Charge at Agagia, on the 26th February 1916, aged 18. It was one of the last great cavalry charges made by the British Army. Percy is also remembered on our Agagia Roll of Honour. He is buried in Alexandria (Chatby) Military And War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt. The CWGC lists “Son of Francis John and Bessie Ada Dunn, of Fleet St., Beaminster, Dorset”. He is also commemorated on the Sherborne War Memorial.

28378 Pte Benjamin Gerrard 7 Bn East Yorkshire Regiment, formerly 31556 Pte 11th Reserve Regiment of Cavalry. Benjamin was born and resided in Beaminster, where he worked as a Motor Delivery Hand. He enlisted for the Great War in May 1916 at Bridport, but had previous military experience, having served in the 10th Hussars (4924 Pte – 1900 to 1908) and 1st Volunteer Bn Dorset Regiment. On re-joining, he originally served with the 11th Reserve Regiment of Cavalry in Tidworth, before being transferred to the East Yorkshire Regiment. Benjamin had married Bessie Marina Gunning at Beaminster in January 1911, and they had a daughter together, Dorothy, who sadly died aged 3. Benjamin was admitted to No.34 Casualty Clearing Station on the 11th March 1917, suffering from Nephritis. He was then sent back to the UK for treatment. Benjamin died of Nephritis at the VAD Hospital in Dorchester on the 7th August 1917. He is buried in Beaminster (Holy Trinity) Churchyard.

Walter died of enteric fever in India on the 1st June 1916 aged 21. He was originally buried in Jullundur Cantonment Cemetery and is now commemorated on the Kirkee 1914 – 1918 Memorial. The CWGC lists “Son of George and Sarah Grimes, of Fleet St., Beaminster, Dorset”.

28783 Pte Charles Randall Griffin 2 Bn Grenadier Guards. Charles was born in Beaminster. He enlisted for the Great War in Bridport. In April 1909 he married Ada Mary Bugler at Beaminster and by 1911 they were living at Sutton Poyntz. They went on to have two children, Kathleen and Charles. Charles was Killed in Action on the 8th October 1917 aged 34. He is buried in Ruisseau Farm Cemetery. The CWGC lists “Husband of Ada Mary Griffin, of Newtown, Beaminster, Dorset”.

2 Lieut Cecil Collins Hann 3 Squadron Royal Flying Corps, formerly 1386 Sgt Royal Flying Corps. Cecil was born in Beaminster in 1891. In January 1914, Cecil was driving his motor car from Romsey to Bournemouth when he was involved in a tragic accident, which resulted in a pedestrian being killed. He enlisted as a soldier in the Royal Flying Corps at Farnborough on the 10th August 1914. He had previously worked as a motor engineer and served with the 4th Dorsets (Territorials) pre-war. He was granted a commission on the 17th October 1915 and served as an Observer on Morane Sauliner aircraft. Cecil was Killed in Action (along with his pilot 2 Lieut Francis W G Marchant) on the 22nd October 1916 aged 25. They had been shot down by German Ace, Hans Berr. Cecil is buried in Heilly Station Cemetery, Mericourt-L’Abbe. The CWGC lists “Son of Albert and Edith Mary Hann, of “Holmleigh”, Beaminster, Dorset”. An individual memorial plaque can be found to Cecil in St Mary’s Church, Beaminster. His medals were sold at auction in March 2014.

He was a pre-war regular soldier and had resided in Beaminster before enlisting for the army in July 1904 at Dorchester. His service took him to India with the Dorset Regiment, but he also found himself in trouble when tried by Court Martial in February 1905 at Colchester. George was sentenced to 56 days imprisonment with hard labour for receiving (knowing them to be stolen) goods that belonged to a comrade. He left the army and was transferred to the reserve in July 1907. He married Edith Mary Hill at Beaminster in February 1912, and together they had a son, Edward Walter George Hussey, born in 1913. When war broke out, he was promptly recalled to the army on the 5th August 1914. George was Killed in Action on the 13th October 1914. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial.

3/7762 Pte Gabriel Kite 1 Bn Dorset Regiment. Gabriel was born and resided in Beaminster. He enlisted for the Great War in Beaminster on the 11th August 1914. He has previously served in the Volunteer Force. Gabriel married Minnie Larcombe at Beaminster in November 1902. They went on to have 8 children together, although sadly suffered from a high infant mortality rate. Gabriel seemed to of had a habit of getting himself into trouble as a young man. In 1893 he was sued for payment of goods supplied, in 1899 he was charged for poaching and again for obscene language. Gabriel was wounded in the abdomen at Hill 60 whilst serving with the 1st Dorsets in 1915. He was evacuated to the UK, but tetanus set in and he Died of Wounds at St Katherine’s Red Cross Auxiliary Hospital in Wantage on the 20th May 1915, aged 43. He was the first death at the hospital, and was given a full military funeral. He is buried in Wantage Cemetery.

It would appear they had separated before his death, although a daughter, Daisy, was listed as having been born in March 1916. George was Killed in Action on the 30th July 1916. He has no known grave and is now commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the missing on the Somme.

In June 1910, he married Mabel Mary Bishop at North Perrott, Somerset and they had two sons, George William Job Legg and Percy Joseph Legg. Joseph was present at Hill 60 on the 1st May 1915 when the 1st Dorsets were gassed in one of the first of such attacks of this new form of warfare. Joseph died from gas poisoning on the 3rd May 1915. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial.

Lieut William Barnard Rhodes-Moorhouse V.C. No.2 Squadron Royal Flying Corps. William was born in London on the 26th September 1887. He was educated at Harrow and then Trinity College, Cambridge. He was a keen aviator, who worked on aircraft experiments pre-war, eventually taking his pilot’s certificate in October 1911. He was the first pilot to ever make a channel crossing with two passengers in 1912. Much has been written about William over the years, and plenty of information can be found online. He joined the Royal Flying Corps soon after war broke out in August 1914. He later joined No.2 Squadron out in France in in March 1915. William was awarded the first ever flying Victoria Cross. He citation reads: “For most conspicuous bravery on 26th April, 1915, in flying to Courtrai and dropping bombs on the railway line near that station. On starting the return journey he was mortally wounded, but succeeded in flying for 35 miles to his destination, at a very low altitude, and reported the successful accomplishment of his object. He has since died of his wounds.” William was buried in Parnham Private Cemetery, Beaminster. The CWGC lists “Son of Edward Moorhouse, of Parnham House, Dorset; husband of Linda Rhodes-Moorhouse. His son William Henry Rhodes-Moorhouse DFC, fell in the 1939-1945 War”.

9444 Pte Alfred Travers 1st Bn Scots Guards. Alfred was born in Beaminster. He had been a pre war regular soldier, originally enlisting in May 1894 at Dorchester (having previously served with the 1st Volunteer Battalion Dorset Regiment). He served with the Scots Guards in South Africa during the Boer War. On his return, he married Amelia Paul in October 1902 in Beaminster and they went on to have four daughters together. He was discharged from the army in September 1902, with his reserve service ending in May 1910. He voluntarily re-joined his old regiment when war broke out in August 1914. Alfred was Killed in Action on the 12th November 1914, aged 40. He has no known grave and is now commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial to the missing in Ypres. His two brothers also appears on the Beaminster War Memorial, see A E Travers and T H Travers.


PTE A. E. TRAVERS *

201112 A/Cpl Albert Travers 1/4th Bn Dorset Regiment. Albert was born and resided in Beaminster. He had been a pre war regular soldier, having enlisted for the Dorset Regiment in Dorchester in January 1900. Prior to this, he had served with the 1st Volunteer Battalion, Dorset Regiment. He served in South Africa during the Boer War, and was discharged on his return home in June 1901. He married Elizabeth Phillips in Broadwindsor in October 1901, and they had three children together. Sadly, Elizabeth died in May 1908. Albert continued to serve with the Territorials, and was selected as one of the 4th Dorsets to represent the Battalion at the Coronation of King George V. Albert died of disease at Sea on the 5th October 1918, aged 47. He is commemorated on the Basra Memorial. The CWGC lists “Son of Joseph and Ellen Travers, of St. Mary’s St., Beaminster, Dorset; husband of the late Elizabeth Travers”. His two brothers also appears on the Beaminster War Memorial, see A Travers and T H Travers.

26002 Pte Bernard Cleall Travers 6th Bn Dorset Regiment. Bernard was born in Beaminster and resided at Church Street, Beaminster. He enlisted for the Great War in Dorchester. Bernard Died of Wounds on the 12th October 1918, aged 21.He is buried in Rocquigny-Equancourt Road British Cemetery, Manancourt. The CWGC lists “Son of Dan and Amy Hannah Travers, of Church St., Beaminster, Dorset”.

He enlisted for the Great War in August 1914 at Beaminster. Arthur was Killed in Action (missing) at Gallipoli on the 21st August 1915, aged 21. He is commemorated on the Helles Memorial. PTE E. TUCK *

760006 Pte Ernest Samuel Tuck 7th Bn Canadian Infantry. Ernest was born in Beaminster on the 2nd April 1890, but emigrated to Canada sometime before the outbreak of war. He had previously served in the 3rd Bn Dorset Regiment, as a Special Reservist. He enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force in November 1915 at Vancouver. Having originally joined the 121st Battalion, he transferred to the 7th Battalion after arriving in England at the end of 1916. On 4th April 1917 he was wounded at Vimy Ridge, with a shell wound to the left shoulder and was sent to recover at Summerdown Camp, Eastbourne after receiving treatment in Leeds. Ernest was Killed in Action (missing) on the 10th November 1917, aged 25. He has no known grave and is now commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial to the missing in Ypres. The CWGC lists “Son of Charles and Fanny Tuck, of 9. Dagmar Rd., Dorchester, Dorset, England”. His brother is also commemorated on the Beaminster War Memorial, see A Tuck.

8704 Pte Charles Hearn Welsford 2nd Bn Dorset Regiment. Charles was born in Beaminster. He was a pre war regular soldier, having enlisted in Dorchester in February 1909. He had previously served with the 4th Dorsets as a Territorial and with the 3rd Dorsets as a Special Reservist. In November 1912, hwe was charged with having a dirty rifle during an inspection, and confined to camp for 5 days. The 2nd Battalion were sent to Mesopotamia as part of the Indian Expeditionary Force “D” in November 1914, with Charles along with them. Charles died of Enteritis on the 22nd April 1916 whilst besieged with his battalion in Kut. He is buried in Kut War Cemetery.
