WILLIAM BOWLES

T4/039623 Dvr William Bowles Army Service Corps Attached 40 Field Ambulance Royal Army Medical Corps. William was born in Charminster and resided in Hedgend, Winterborne Stickland. He enlisted for the Great War in Blandford, having previously been a Farm Labourer. William Died on the 13th October 1918. He is buried in Tehran War Cemetery. His next of kin was his father Charles.

FREDERICK CHENEY

5111 Pte Frederick Cheney 3 Bn London Regiment. Frederick was born in Pimperne and resided in Blandford. He enlisted for the Great War in Kingston-on-Thames. Frederick was Killed in Action on the 22nd April 1915 aged 25. He has no known grave and is now commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial to the missing in Ypres. The CWGC lists "Son of Benjamin and Ruth Cheney, of Fieldgroves, Bryanston, Blandford, Dorset". His brother also appears on the Winterborne Stickland War Memorial, see next entry.

GEORGE CHENEY

20625 Pte George Cheney 2 Bn York and Lancaster Regiment, Formerly 16221 Pte Hussars. George was born in Blandford. He enlisted for the Great War in Blandford too. George was Killed in Action at Hooge on the 9th August 1915 aged 34. He has no known grave and is now commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial to the missing in Ypres. The CWGC lists "Son of Benjamin and Ruth Cheney, of Fieldgroves, Bryanston, Blandford, Dorset". His brother also appears on the Winterborne Stickland Memorial, see previous entry.

WILLIE DENNIS

202885 Pte William Dennis 2/4 Bn Oxford & Bucks Light Infantry. William resided in Blandford. He enlisted for the Great War in Dorchester. William was Killed in Action on the 22nd August 1917 aged 22. He has no known grave and is now commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial. The CWGC "Son of Philip J. and Ann Dennis, of Stickland, Blandford, Dorset".

WILLIAM HENRY DIMENT

9386 L/Cpl William Henry Diment 2 Bn Dorset Regiment. William was born in Newton, Dorchester and resided in Blandford. In 1906 he was living in Winterborne Stickland. He was a pre war regular soldier having enlisted at Dorchester in April 1912, having been a Farm Labourer. In January 1914 he was given 10 days confined to barracks for overstaying his pass for 2 days. He was wounded in Mesopotamia in January 1916. William Died frrom the effects of heat on the 19th July 1917. He is buried in Baghdad (North Gate) War Cemetery. His personal effects were returned to his father, William James Diment in Milborne St Andrew and consisted of the following: ID Disc, Postcard, Pipe, Letters, Photos and a wrist watch. Also remembered on Dewlish War Memorial.

LEVI JOHN FIANDER

18195 Pte Levi John Fiander 5 Bn Dorset Regiment. Levi was born in Milton Abbas and resided in Winterborne Stickland. He enlisted for the Great War in Blandford, having previously been a Farm Labourer. He married Elizabeth Hannah Robbins at Winterborne Houghton in October 1905. Levi Died of Wounds on the 29th November 1917 aged 32. He is buried in Longuenesse (St Omer) Souvenir Cemetery. The CWGC lists "Son of Frederick Fiander, of Milton Abbas, Blandford; husband of Elizabeth Hannah Fiander, of Stickland, Blandford". Also remembered on Milton Abbas War Memorial.

ERNEST FORDER

Lieut Ernest George Forder 75 Sqn Royal Air Force, Formerly 12847 Pte B Coy 5 Bn Canadian Infantry. Ernest was born on the 26th July 1893 in Dorset. He enlisted for the Great War in September 1914 at Valcartier, having previous served with the 16th Light Horse from August 1914. He had been a Locamotive Fireman before the war. Ernest was wounded on the 9th October 1916. He was taken Prisoner of War in Italy in May 1918. Ernest Died in an Aeroplane accident when his Sopwith Camel crashed at Elmswell on the 25th February 1919 aged 26. He is buried in Winterborne Stickland (St Mary) Churchyard. His next of kin were his parents residing in Winterborne Stickland.

GEORGE MILLER

16293 Pte George James Miller 2 Bn Dorset Regiment. George was born and resided in Winterborne Stickland. He enlisted for the Great War in Blandford. George Died of Disease on the 17th May 1917 aged 21 in Mesopotamia. He is commemorated on the Basra Memorial. The CWGC lists "Son of George Miller, of Quarelstone, Stickland, Blandford, Dorset".

WALTER RICKETTS

19558 Pte Walter George Ricketts 6 Bn Dorset Regiment. Walter was born and resided in Winterborne Stickland. He enlisted for the Great War in Dorchester. Walter was Killed in Action on the 24th May 1917 aged 22. He is buried in Thiepval Anglo-French Cemetery. His remains were discovered after the war and identified by his titles, cap badge, watch and chain. The CWGC lists "Son of William James Ricketts, of Winterborne, Stickland, Dorset".

FREDERICK SPRAKE

19567 Pte Frederick Richard Sprake 6 Bn Dorset Regiment, Formerly 2356 Pte Dorset Yeomanry. Frederick was born and resided in Winterborne Stickland. He enlisted for the Great War in Blandford. Frederick Died of Disease in Hospital on the 30th January 1917 aged 30. He is buried in St Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen. The CWGC lists "Son of John and Sophia Sprake, of Hedge End, Blandford, Dorset".

JOSEPH STEPHEN UPSHALL

9590 L/Cpl Stephen Upshall 1 Bn Dorset Regiment. Stephen was born in Winterborne Stickland and resided in Compton Valence. He was a pre war regular soldier and enlisted at Dorchester in September 1913. He had previously been an Agricultural Labourer. Stephen was Killed in Action on the 10th July 1916. He has no known grave and is now commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the missing on the Somme. His next of kin was his father Sylvester Upshall.

HARRY GEORGE WHITTINGHAM

439497 Pte Harry George Whittingham 474 Agricultural Coy Labour Corps, Formerly 63352 Pte Machine Gun Corps and 2543 Pte 4 Bn Dorset Regiment. Harry Died at the Military Hospital in York on the 28th February 1919 aged 22. He is buried in Winterborne Stickland (St Mary) Churchyard. The CWGC lists "Son of Mrs. Annie Whittingham, of Stickland, Blandford".
