1914

EDWARD PHILPS

9537 Pte Edward Shepherd Philps 1 Bn Dorset Regiment. Edward was born in Levington and resided in Sturminster Newton. He was a pre war regular soldier having enlisted in Blandford. Edward was Killed in Action (Presumed Dead) on the 24th August 1914. He is buried in Hautrage Military Cemetery. The CWGC lists "Son of Edward George and Annie Philps, of 38, Shillingstone, Dorset".

FREDERICK NEWMAN

10008 Pte Frederick Newman C Coy 5 Bn Dorset Regiment. Frederick was born in Sturminster Newton and resided in Burnham. He enlisted for the Great War at Blandford in August 1914. He had previously been a Plate Layer. Frederick Died of Wounds received at Gallipoli on the 8th August 1915 aged 24. He Died at Sea whilst onboard HS Valdivia from gun shot wounds to the Abdomen and was buried at sea. He is now commemorated on the Helles Memorial. The CWGC lists "Son of William and Tryphosa Newman, of Huntspill Crossing, Edington Burtle, Bridgwater, Somerset".

JACK HART

RMA/9811 Gnr Frederick John Hart HMS Good Hope Royal Marine Artillery. Jack was born on 10th November 1882 in Shillingstone. He was a pre war Marine who had enlisted in November 1901. Jack was Killed in Action on the 1st November 1914 aged 37 when HMS Good Hope was sank at the Battle of Coronel with a loss of the entire crew. His body was not recovered for burial. He is now commemorated on Portsmouth Naval Memorial. The CWGC lists "Son of Elizabeth Ann Hart, of Station Rd., Shillingstone, Blandford, Dorset, and the late Henry Hart".

1915

WALTER INKPEN

11001 Sgt Walter Inkpen 5 Bn Dorset Regiment. Walter was born and resided in Shillingstone. He enlisted for the Great War in Shaftesbury. Walter was Killed in Action at Gallipoli on the 21st August 1915 aged 28. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Helles Memorial to the missing. The CWGC lists "Son of John R. B. and Martha Inkpen, of Shillingstone, Dorset. His brothers Bertram Inkpen and Ernest John Inkpen also fell".

DAVID HERBERT ROBINS

10585 L/Cpl David Herbert Robins 5 Bn Dorset Regiment. David was born in Tisbury and resided in Shillingstone. He enlisted for the Great War in Dorchester. David was Killed in Action (Presumed Dead) at Gallipoli on the 21st August 1915 aged 21. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Helles Memorial to the missing. The CWGC lists "Son of Samuel and Eliza Frances Robins, of "Sunny Bank," Shillingstone, Blandford".

1916

JOHN CLARKE

7105 L/Cpl William John Clarke 1 Bn and Depot Hampshire Regiment. William was born in Fillisford and resided at Ashley Manor Farm, Near Brockenhurst. He was a pre war regular soldier having enlisted in Lymington. William Died on the 16th May 1916. He is buried in Shillingstone (Holy Rood) Churchyard.

JAMES LIGHT

3/7689 Pte James Light 1 Bn Dorset Regiment. James was born in Shillingstone and resided in Blandford. He was a Special Reservist who had enlisted in Sturminster Newton. James was present at Hill 60 on the 1st May 1915 when the 1st Dorsets were gassed in one of the first of such attacks of this new form of warfare. He died from gas poisoning on the 2nd May 1915 aged 36. He has no known grave and is now commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial to the missing in Ypres. The CWGC lists "Son of Bessie Hart (formerly Light), of Ivy Cottage, Shillingstone, Dorset, and the late Morgan Light".

JACK STAINER

7550 Pte Jack Stainer 1 Bn Hampshire Regiment. Jack was born and resided in Shillingstone. He was a pre war regular soldier having enlisted in Winchester. Jack was Killed in Action on the 30th May 1915 aged 27. He has no known grave and is now commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial to the missing in Ypres. The CWGC lists "Son of Charles and Rose Stainer, of Shillingstone, Blandford, Dorset".

ALBERT LAWS

K/22747 A/L-Sto Albert Laws HMS Queen Mary. Albert was born on the 5th November 1889 at Blandford. He was a pre war sailor having joined the Royal Navy in June1909. He had previously been a Cowman. Albert was Killed in Action at the Battle of Jutland on the 31st May 1916. HMS Queen Mary was sunk with the loss of over 1250 men onboard. Albert's body was not recovered for burial. He is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial. The CWGC lists "Son of Mr. and Mrs. Laws, of Bere Marsh, Shillingstone, Dorset; husband of Kate E. Laws, of 37, Mafeking Rd., Southsea, Portsmouth".

EDWARD STARKS

9664 Cpl Arthur Edward Starks 1 Bn Dorset Regiment. Arthur was born and resided in Shillingstone. He was a pre war regular soldier having enlisted at Dorchester in February 1914. He had previously been an Agricultural Labourer and served in the 4th Dorsets (Territorials). Arthur was Killed in Action on the 14th January 1916 aged 20. He is now buried in Peronne Road Cemetery, Maricourt. The CWGC lists "Son of Mrs. Emily Starks, of 45, Chapel Rd., Shillingstone, Blandford, Dorset".

ROBERT HART

7818 Pte Robert Hart 2 Bn Dorset Regiment. Robert was born and resided in Shillingstone. He was a pre war regular soldier having enlisted at Dorchester. The 2nd Battalion were sent to Mesopotamia as part of the Indian Expeditionary Force "D" in November 1914, with Robert along with them. He was taken Prisoner of War at the fall of Kut after months of siege, along with what remained of the shattered 2nd Battalion and Indian Expeditionary Force "D". It was whilst a Prisoner of War he died of Dysentery in Turkish hands on the 15th August 1916. He is buried in Baghdad (North Gate) War Cemetery.

ERNEST INKPEN

173268 Spr Ernest John Inkpen 276 Railway Coy Royal Engineers, Formerly 12640 Pte Dorset Regiment. Ernest resided in Blandford. He enlisted for the Great War in Shaftesbury. Ernest Died on the 9th September 1916 aged 21 at 26 Stationary Hospital, Ismailia. He is buried in Ismailia War Memorial Cemetery. The CWGC lists "Son of John R. B. and Martha Inkpen, of Shillingstone, Blandford, Dorset. His brothers Bertram Inkpen and Walter Inkpen also fell".

ARTHUR FREDERICK RIDOUT

2624 A/RSM Arthur Frederick Ridout D Coy 1/19 Bn London Regiment. Arthur resided at Tooting Junction. He enlisted for the Great War in Camden Town. Arthur was Killed in Action on the 15th September 1916. He is buried in London Cemetery and Extension, Longueval. The CWGC lists "Son of Frederick and Elizabeth Ridout, of Okeford Fitzpaine, Dorsetshire; husband of Ella Ridout, of 14, Balham Park Rd., Balham, London".

BERTRAM INKPEN

12551 Pte Bertram George Inkpen 1 Bn Gordon Highlanders. Bertram was born in Shillingstone. He enlisted for the Great War in Dorchester. Bertram was Killed in Action (Presumed Dead) on the 18th August 1916 aged 18. He has no known grave and is now commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the missing on the Somme. The CWGC lists "Son of Mr. J.R.B. and Mrs. M. Inkpen, of 18, Shillingstone, Blandford, Dorset. His brothers Ernest John Inkpen and Walter Inkpen also fell".

FREDERICK CHARLES TOOZE

17481 L/Cpl Frederick Charles Tooze 2 Bn Dorset Regiment. Frederick was born and resided in Shillingstone. He enlisted for the Great War in Sturminster Newton. Frederick Died of Disease in Basra on the 28th January 1917 aged 28. He is buried in Basra War Cemetery. The CWGC lists "Son of John and Elizabeth Tooze, of Shillingstone, Blandford, Dorset".

WILLIAM JAMES LAWS

63128 Gnr William James Laws 6 Z Trench Mortar Battery Royal Garrison Artillery. William was born and resided in Shillingstone. He enlisted for the Great War at Sturminster Newton in October 1915. He had previously been a Packer. William was Killed in Action on the 23rd January 1917 aged 21. He is buried in Cambrin Churchyard Extension. The CWGC lists "Son of Joseph and Kate Laws, of Hill Knapp, Shillingstone, Dorset".

REGINALD SYDNEY HART

11650 Gnr Reginald Sidney Hart 62 Divisional Ammunition Column Royal Field Artillery. Reginald was born in Blandford. He enlisted for the Great War in Bath. Reginald was Killed in Action on the 27th October 1917 aged 22. He is buried in Favreuil British Cemetery. The CWGC lists "Son of Henry and the late Eliza Hart, of 29, Shillingstone, Blandford, Dorset".

FREDERICK NEWMAN

PLY/1204(S) Pte Fred Newman 2 Bn Royal Marine Light Infantry. Fred was born on the 16th July 1896 at Blandford. He enlisted for the Great War in November 1915. He suffered from Trench Foot and was invalid back to the UK in February 1917. He rejoined his Battalion on the Western Front in July 1917. Fred was Killed in Action on the 26th October 1917 aged 21. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial to the missing. The CWGC lists "Son of John and Agnes Louisa Newman, of 6, Blandford Rd., Shillingstone, Dorset".

1918

ALBERT EDWARD ADAMS

129246 Gnr Albert Edward Adams 99 Siege Battery Royal Garrison Artillery. Albert was born in Child Okeford and resided in Shillingstone. He enlisted for the Great War in Sturminster Newton. Albert Died of Wounds at 35 General Hospital on the 15th May 1918 aged 31. He is buried in Les Baraques Military Cemetery, Sangatte. The CWGC lists "Son of Edward and Mary Adams, of The Cross, Shillingstone, Dorset".

ALFRED MESHER

125312 Pte Alfred William Mesher 31 Bn Machine Gun Corps, Formerly 7756 Pte Army Ordnance Corps. Alfred was born in Pimperne and resided in Shillingstone. He enlisted for the Great War in Blandford. Alfred Died of Wounds on the 29th June 1918 aged 22. He is buried in Cinq Rues British Cemetery, Hazebrouck. The CWGC lists "Son of William and Kate Mesher, of 1, Oakwood Cottage, London Road, Mitcham, Surrey. Born at Pimperne, Dorset".

SYDNEY WHITE-ROGERS

R/6363 AB Sidney White Rogers Depot Royal Naval Division. Sidney was born on the 25th November 1891 at Shillingstone. He enlisted into the Army Reserve in March 1916 and was called up for the Royal Naval Division in September 1917. He joined the Hawke Battalion on the Western Front in January 1918. In March 1918 he was gassed and invalid back to the UK. Sidney Died of Pneumonia at 9:45pm in Connaught Hospital, Aldershot on the 22nd July 1918 aged 26. He is buried in the same grave as his brother at Shillingstone (Holy Rood) Churchyard. The CWGC lists "Son of Mrs. Eliza White Rogers, of Shillingstone".

ERNEST GEORGE WOOLRIDGE

267847 Cpl Ernest George Woolridge (Military Medal) D Battery 83 Brigade Royal Field Artillery, Formerly 6899 Cpl Dragoon Guards. Ernest was born in Blandford. He was a pre war regular soldier having enlisted in Blandford too. Ernest was Killed in Action on the 3rd September 1918. He is buried in Guillemont Road Cemetery, Guillemont.

ARTHUR JOHN CLARK

21048 Pte Arthur Clark 1 County of London Yeomanry, Formerly 8 Hussars. Arthur Died of Malaria on the 19th April 1919 aged 26. He is now buried in Cairo War Memorial Cemetery.

11059 Sgt Percival John Sheppard Read 6 Bn Dorset Regiment. Percival was born in Blandford. He enlisted for the Great War in Blandford too. Percival was Killed in Action on the 10th October 1918 aged 22. He is now buried in Montay-Neuvilly Road Cemetery, Montay. The CWGC lists "Son of John William and Eliza Ann Read, of The Cross, Shillingstone, Dorset". His brother also appears on the Shillingstone War Memorial, see next entry.

ERNEST W E GLADSTONE READ 1919

242258 Pte Ernest William Ewart Gladstone Read 1/5 Bn Somerset Light Infantry, Formerly 1685 2/4 Bn A/L/Cpl Dorset Regiment. Ernest Died of Disease in Hospital at Blandford on the 11th March 1919 aged 25. He is buried in Shillingstone (Holy Rood) Churchyard on the 14th March 1919. His brother also appears on the Shillingstone War Memorial, see the above entry.
