LIEUT E D MURRAY

T/Lieut Edward Douglas Murray 8 Bn Black Watch. Edward was born in 1884 at Shapwick. He resided at 16 Bedford Row, Middlesex and was a solicitor by trade. His father Richard was the vicar at Shapwick. Edward Died of Wounds he had received the previous day on the 20th July 1916 aged 32. He is buried in Corbie Communal Cemetery Extension. The CWGC lists "Son of Richard Paget Murray and Ada Constance Murray, of 190, Iffley Road, Oxford". His medals are currently up for sale here. PTE J G ANDREWS

200700 (2353) Pte John George Andrews 1/4 Bn Dorset Regiment. John was born and resided in Shapwick. He enlisted for the Great War in Dorchester. John Died of Disease on the 26th January 1918 aged 30. He is buried in Amara War Cemetery. The CWGC lists "Son of Mr. J. G. Andrews, of Shapwick, Blandford, Dorset".

PTE F G BENNETT

12660 Pte Frederick George Bennett 5 Bn Dorset Regiment. Frederick was born and resided in Blandford. He enlisted for the Great War in Dorchester. Frederick was Killed in Action on the 16th August 1917 aged 27. He is now buried in Bedford House Cemetery. The CWGC lists "Son of John and Jane Bennett; husband of Celia Eliza Bennett, of Crab Farm Cottages, Shapwick, Blandford, Dorset".

PTE P BROWNSEA

12663 Pte Frederick Percy Victor Brownsea 5 Bn Dorset Regiment. Frederick was born in Shapwick. He enlisted for the Great War in Blandford. Frederick Died of Enteric Fever on the 12th October 1915. He is buried in Pieta Military Cemetery.

PTE C J KERLEY

40972 Pte Cecil Kerley 6 Bn Dorset Regiment. Cecil was born in Shapwick and resided in Blandford. He enlisted for the Great War in Dorchester. Cecil Died of Wounds on the 12th October 1918 aged 20. He is buried in Rocquigny-Equancourt Road British Cemetery, Manancourt. The CWGC lists "Son of Mrs. Fanny Kerley, of Shapwick, Blandford, Dorset".

PTE H G WEEKS

10475 Pte Henry Charles Weeks 5 Bn Dorset Regiment. Henry was born and resided in Shapwick. He enlisted for the Great War in August 1914 at Dorchester, and was previously a Labourer. Henry was Killed in Action at Gallipoli on the 12th September 1915 aged 22. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Helles Memorial. The CWGC lists "Son of David and Harriett Weeks, of Shapwick, Blandford, Dorset".

PTE W MANUEL

G/29377 Pte William Charles Manuel 7 Bn Royal West Surrey Regiment, Formerly 70300 Pte Devon Regiment. William was born at Winterborne Kingston. He resided at Shapwick with his parents Charles and Elizabeth and his three sisters. He enlisted for the Great War in Dorchester. William was Killed in Action on the 23rd October 1918. He is now buried in Le Cateau Communal Cemetery. Although Shapwick War Memorial lists William as a member of the Royal Field Artillery, we have no doubt this is an error and we have the right man listed here after detailed research.
