LIEUT CYRIL SHAKESPEAR BEACHCROFT

Lieut Cyril Shakespear Beachcroft Household Bn, Formerly Dorset Yeomanry. Cyril resided at 39 Murray Road, Wimbledon and was a Solicitor by trade having attended Charterhouse School. Cyril was Killed in Action on the 12th October 1917 aged 32. He is now buried in Poelcapelle British Cemetery. The CWGC lists "Son of Charles Seward Beachcroft and Emily Caroline Frances Beachcroft; husband of Edith Vivien Beachcroft, of 8, Hillside, Wimbledon, London. Formerly Capt. and Adjt., Dorset Yeomanry". His body was found after the war in an unmarked grave.

SERGEANT JOHN SELLERS

24847 Cpl John Sellers 5 Bn Dorset Regiment. John was born in Morden and resided in Wareham. He enlisted for the Great War in Dorchester. John was Killed in Action on the 1st October 1918 aged 26. He is buried in Sucrerie Cemetery, Epinoy. The CWGC lists "Son of Thomas and Ellen Sellers, of Morden, Wareham, Dorset".

PRIVATE SYDNEY SHORT

31850 Pte Sidney George Short 1 Bn Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry, Formerly 17163 Pte Dorset Regiment. Sidney was born in Sturminster Marshall and resided at 78 East Morden having previously been a Bricklayers Labourer. In November 1916 he was sentenced to 7 days Field Punishment No.2 for not complying with an order. Sidney was also a trained Trench Mortarman. He was discharged from the army as no longer physically fit on Christmas Day 1917. This was due to having been gassed on the Western Front in October 1917. He had previously been wounded with a gun shot wound to the back on the 9th May 1917. Sidney Died on the 26th September 1919 aged 22. He is buried in Morden (St Mary) Churchyard. The CWGC lists "Son of Mr. and Mrs. E. Short, of 78, Morden, Wareham, Dorset".

PRIVATE WILLIAM SAUNDERS

200629 Pte William George Saunders 1/4 Bn Dorset Regiment. William was born in West Morden and resided in Wareham. He enlisted for the Great War in Dorchester. William was Killed in Action on the 31st December 1916. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Basra Memorial.

PRIVATE JAMES DAVIS

266796 Pte James Edwin Davis 1/1 Bucks Bn Oxford & Bucks Light Infantry. James enlisted for the Great War in Wareham. He was Killed in Action on the 16th August 1917 aged 21. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial to the missing. The CWGC lists "Son of Israel and Matilda Davis, of Heath Farm, Bloxworth, Wareham, Dorset".

PRIVATE ERNEST ROPER

231572 (2743) Pte Ernest John Roper 1/1 Dorset Yeomanry. Ernest Died on the 25th January 1919 aged 31. He is buried in Alexandria (Hadra) War Memorial Cemetery. The CWGC lists "Son of William and Sarah Ann Roper, of Frogmore Farm, West Morden, Wareham, Dorset".

PRIVATE HERBERT BATTEN

10788 Pte Percival Hubert Batten 1 Bn Dorset Regiment. Percival was born in Farley, Wiltshire. He enlisted for the Great War in Blandford. Percival Died of Wounds on the 14th June 1916 aged 20. He is buried in Warloy-Baillon Communal Cemetery Extension. The CWGC lists "Son of Harvey and Hester Batten, of Charborough Park, nr. Blandford, Dorsetshire".

PRIVATE FREDERICK BEDWELL

10196 Pte Frederick Charles Bedwell 5 Bn Dorset Regiment. Frederick was born in Ingleby Greenhow, Yorkshire on the 12th June 1885. He resided at Moor Farm Cottage, Chickerell and enlisted for the Great War in August 1914 at Wareham. Before this he was working as an Agricultural Labourer. In 1902 he had joined the Royal Navy, but was invalided out the following year. He had a wife, Elizabeth who he had married in 1912 in Weymouth. They had three children together, one of whom died a month before Frederick. Frederick was Killed in Action (Missing, Presumed Dead) on the 21st August 1915 at Gallipoli. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Helles Memorial.
