ALBERT HENRY BRAZIER

8782 Sgt Albert Henry Brazier 1 Bn Dorset Regiment. Albert was born on the 29th April 1890 in Ryde on the Isle of Wight and resided at Kingston-on-Thames. He was a pre war regular soldier and enlisted at Dorchester in January 1910. He had previously been a Gardener. Albert was Killed in Action on the 24th August 1914 aged 24 less than a month after Britain entered the Great War. He is now buired in Hautrage Military Cemetery. The CWGC lists "Son of the late Henry Brazier".

FREDERICK ALLEN

3/7809 Pte Frederick James Allen 1 Bn Dorset Regiment. Frederick was born in Poole. He was a Special Reservist who had enlisted in Poole too. Frederick was Killed in Action on the 6th November 1914 aged 39. He has no known grave and is now commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial to the missing in Ypres. The CWGC lists "Son of Mrs. O. Allen, of 4, George St., Salisbury. His brother Sidney Charles also fell". Also remembered on Broadstone War Memorial.

HENRY CHARLES HOPKINS

6338 Pte Henry Charles Hopkins 1 Bn Dorset Regiment. Henry was born at Bourne Valley in Parkstone and resided in Parkstone. He was a pre war regular soldier and enlisted at Dorchester in November 1913. He had previously been a Labourer. In January 1911 he married Beatrice Ellen Diffey of Hamworthy. Henry was Killed in Action on the 13th October 1914 aged 31. He has no known grave and is now commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial. The CWGC lists "Son of Alfred and Alice Hopkins, of 112, Churchill Rd., Upper Parkstone; husband of Beatrice E. Hopkins, of 150, Sandy Lane, Lytchett Minster, Poole, Dorset".

WALTER CRITCHELL

3/8070 L/Cpl Walter Critchell 1 Bn Dorset Regiment. Walter was born in Weymouth and resided in Hamworthy. He was a Special Reservist who had enlisted in Poole. Walter was Killed in Action on the 9th December 1914 aged 36. He is now commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial in Ypres to the missing and has no known grave. The CWGC lists "Husband of F. F. Critchell, of 13, Lynwood Terrace, Hamworthy, Poole, Dorset".

SIDNEY WOODLAND

PO/16354 Pte Sidney Alfred Woodland HMS Queen Elizabeth Royal Marine Light Infantry. Sidney was born on the 5th July 1894 in Ilminster. He was a pre war marine, having enlisted in June 1912. Sidney Died on the 11th December 1915 aged 21 in a boating accident in Poole Harbour. whilst home on leave. Sidney had been with two other men from Hamworthy, Alfred Owen Smith and AB Henry George Alfred Cobb of the Royal Navy. The men were in a double-handed canoe, which became swamped. The three men managed to reach Hutchings Buoy where they clung on. Henry Cobb at this stage swam after the canoe, a move that it would turn out saved his life after being rescued by a barge. Unfortunately Sidney and Alfred could not be saved in time. Sidney is buried in Hamworthy (St. Michael) Churchyard. The CWGC lists "Son of Alfred and Sarah Woodland, of 25, Ivor Rd., Hamworthy". His mother was listed as his next of kin, and she also resided at 3 Sea View Terrace, Hamworthy. His brother is also commemorated on the Hamworthy War Memorial. See below for William Henry Woodland.

AUGUSTUS BALL

2059T Sto Augustus Ball HMS Invincible. Augustus was born on the 12th November 1881 in Poole. He was Killed in Action at the Battle of Jutland on the 31st May 1916. HMS Invincible was sunk in 90 seconds with only 6 survivors. His body was not recovered for burial. He is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial. His next of kin was his wife, Mary Jane who resided at 5 South Road, Harworthy.

PERCIVAL TUCKER

J/5106 AB Percival Andrew Tucker HMS Queen Mary. Percy was born on the 10th October 1893 in Poole. He was a pre war sailor in the Royal Navy having enlisted in October 1911. Before this he was a Junior Clerk. Percy was Killed in Action at the Battle of Jutland on the 31st May 1916 aged 22. HMS Queen Mary was sunk with the loss of over 1250 men onboard. Percy's body was not recovered for burial. He is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial. The CWGC lists "Son of Moses and Sarah Matilda Tucker, of Halter Path, Hamworthy, Poole, Dorset".

WILLIAM HENRY WOODLAND

PO/12390 Pte William Henry Woodland HMS Southampton Royal Marine Light Infantry. William was born on the 16th March 1881 at Ilminster. He was a pre war marine, having enlisted in November 1899. William was Killed in Action at the Battle of Jutland on the 31st May 1916 aged 33. HMS Southampton was struck by a torpedo, but did not sink. He was buried at sea and is now commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial. The CWGC lists "Son of Alfred and Sarah Woodland, of 25, Ivor Rd., Hamworthy, Poole, Dorset". His mother was listed as his next of kin, and she also resided at Seaview Cottage, Hamworthy. His brother is also commemorated on the Hamworthy War Memorial. See above for Sidney Woodland.

RICHARD HOARE

7118 Pte Richard John Hoare 2 Bn Hampshire Regiment. Richard was born in Wimborne and resided in Ashington and at 6 Lynwood Terrace, Hamworthy. He was a pre war regular soldier and enlisted in Winchester, having previously been a Commercial Motor Driver. Richard Died of Wounds on the 20th October 1916. He has no known grave and is now commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the missing on the Somme.

WILLIAM DIFFEY

3/7533 Pte William Diffey 5 Bn Dorset Regiment. William was born in Wareham. He was a Special Reservist who had enlisted in Poole. William was Killed in Action on the 11th January 1917 aged 37. He has no known grave and is now commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the missing on the Somme. The CWGC lists "Son of John and Ellen Diffey, of Avenue Rd., Hamworthy Junction, Poole, Dorset".

JAMES COBB

14796 Pte Walter James Cobb 5 Bn Dorset Regiment. Walter was born in Poole. He enlisted for the Great War in Poole too. Walter was Killed in Action on the 26th September 1916. He has no known grave and is now commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the missing on the Somme.

PERCY SHORT

331080 Rfn Percy Short 1/8 Bn Hampshire Regiment. Percy was born and resided in Hamworthy. He enlisted for the Great War in Brockenhurst. Percy Died of Wounds on the 21st April 1917 aged 22. He is buried in Deir El Belah War Cemetery. The CWGC lists "Son of John and Annie Short, of 8, Railway Cottages, Hamworthy Junction, Poole, Dorset".

ALFRED HARRIS

25027 Pte Alfred Edward Harris 2 Bn Hampshire Regiment. Alfred was born and resided in Bournemouth. He enlisted for the Great War in Holton. Alfred Died of Wounds on the 24th April 1917 aged 25. He is buried in Duisans British Cemetery, Etrun. The CWGC lists "Husband of Ada Emilie Harris, of 195, Blandford Rd., Hamworthy, Poole, Dorset".

WILLIAM RANDALL

8501 Pte Charles William Randall 2 Bn Dorset Regiment. Charles was born in Wareham and resided in Hamworthy. He was a pre war regular soldier and enlisted at Dorchester. The 2nd Battalion were sent to Mesopotamia as part of the Indian Expeditionary Force "D" in November 1914, with Charles along with them. He was taken Prisoner of War at the fall of Kut after months of siege, along with what remained of the shattered 2nd Battalion and Indian Expeditionary Force "D". It was whilst a Prisoner of War he died of Dysentery in Turkish hands on the 19th August 1916 aged 27 at Baghtche. He is buried in Baghdad (North Gate) War Cemetery. The CWGC lists "Son of Eliza Rolls, of Carters Avenue, Hamworthy, Poole, Dorset".

WILFRED COX

265546 Pte Wilfred Arthur Cox 7 Bn Somerset Light Infantry, Formerly 2594 Pte 4 Bn Dorset Regiment. Wilfred resided in Hamworthy and enlisted for the Great War in Dorchester. He Died of Wounds on the 26th August 1917 aged 23. Wilfred is buried in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery. The CWGC lists "Son of Walter James and Amelia Cox, of Carters Avenue, Hamworthy, Dorset".

BERTIE INGRAM

26582 L/Cpl Bertie Ingram 6 Bn Wiltshire Regiment, Formerly 18124 Dorset Regiment. Bertie was born and Hamworthy and resided in Poole. He enlisted for the Great War in Salisbury. Bertie was Killed in Action on the 20th September 1917 aged 33. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial to the Missing. The CWGC lists "Son of the late Henry and Ellen Jane Ingram".

JAMES HALE

201402 Pte James Hale C Coy 2/4 Bn Dorset Regiment. James was born in Poole and resided in Hamworthy. He enlisted for the Great War in Poole. James was Killed in Action on the 24th November 1917 aged 26. He is buried in Jerusalem War Cemetery. The CWGC lists "Son of Clara Hale, of 13, South Rd., Hamworthy, Poole, Dorset".

JOHN KEARLEY

25748 Pte John Kearley 5 Bn Dorset Regiment. John was born in Poole. He enlisted for the Great War in Poole too. John was Killed in Action on the 5th October 1917 aged 19. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial to the Missing. The CWGC lists "Son of Mrs. M. A. Kearley, of 170, Bennett's Place, Hamworthy Junction, Poole, Dorset, and the late Tom Kearley".

DOUGLAS WADHAM

135555 Gnr Francis William Douglas Wadham 44 Reserve Battery Royal Horse Artillery. Francis was born in Hamworthy. He enlisted for the Great War in Poole. Francis Died on the 7th May 1918 aged 23. He is buried in Hamworthy (St. Michael) Churchyard. The CWGC lists "Son of Francis William and Ellen Elizabeth Wadham, of Blandford Rd., Hamworthy".

LEONARD GILLINGHAM

19785 Pte Leonard Gillingham 1 Bn Dorset Regiment. Leonard was born in Wimborne and resided in Parkstone. He enlisted for the Great War in Dorchester. Leonard was Killed in Action on the 21st May 1918. He is buried in Berles New Military Cemetery. He was killed almost a month to the day from his brother Albert who is also remembered on the Hamworthy War Memorial. See below entry for Albert Gillingham. Strangely, the two brothers are buried in the same cemetery.

JAMES AMBROSE MANUEL

334310 A/Bmdr Ambrose James Manuel 286 Siege Battery Royal Garrison Artillery. Ambrose was born in Hamworthy. He enlisted for the Great War at Poole in August 1915. Ambrose was Killed in Action whilst assisting to destroy a gun to prevent it falling into enemy hands on the 27th May 1918 aged 24. He is buried in Beaurepaire French National Cemetery, Pontavert. The CWGC lists "Son of Ambrose James and Sarah Manuel, of 186, Blandford Rd., Hamworthy, Poole, Dorset". His officer, Lieut C H Rosenthal wrote "The loss of this gallant N.C.O. is greatly felt by the remainder of his battery, with whom he was very popular. As his section officer I should desire to pay a tribute to his cheery willingness and continual bravery in action. In this respect he was an example of what the British soldier should be."

SAMUEL BOWMAN

588 Pte Samuel George Pascoe Bowman (Military Medal) B Coy 35 Bn Australian Infantry. Samuel was born in Broadstone and enlisted for the Great War in January 1916 at Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia. Before this he was a Labourer. Samuel was Killed in Action (Wounded and Missing) on the 4th October 1917. He has no known grave and He is now commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial in Ypres to the missing. He gave his father as his next of kin, James Bowman who resided at 57 Blandford Road, Hamworthy. He however left all his effects to his sister Mrs Eva Mary Lush of 4 Doultons Terrace, Lake Road, Hamworthy. His effects sent to his father and sister included "Bible, razor, buttons x2, rubber armlets x2, leather purse, coins x3".

TOM SKINNER

158991 Gnr Thomas Skinner 25 Fire Command Royal Garrison Artillery. Tom was born in Hamworthy and enlisted for the Great War in Poole. He Died on the 11th July 1918 aged 36. He is buried in Hamworthy (St. Michael) Churchyard. The CWGC lists "Son of Ralph and Caroline Skinner, of Hamworthy Junction; husband of Emily Eliza Skinner, of 67, Bennett's Place, Hamworthy". His brother Jesse is also remembered on the Hamworthy War Memorial, see the next entry. They died a week apart from each other.

JESSE SKINNER

6857/TS Trimmer Jesse Skinner HM Trawler Comrade. Jesse was born on the 7th March 1880 in Poole. He resided at 10 Lake Road, Hamworthy. Jesse Died on the 6th July 1918 aged 38 at Famagusta Harbour. He is buried in Famagusta Military Cemetery. The CWGC lists "Son of Ralph and Caroline Skinner, of Heatherlea Lake Rd., Hamworthy, Dorset". His brother Tom is also remembered on the Hamworthy War Memorial, see the above entry. They died a week apart from each other.

EDGAR WEBB

27895 Pte Edgar Herbert Webb 12 Bn Somerset Light Infantry, Formerly 18906 Pte Dorset Regiment. Edgar was born in Liphook and resided at Hamworthy. He enlisted for the Great War in Poole. Edgar was Killed in Action on the 12th August 1917 aged 20. He is buried in St. Venant-Robecq Road British Cemetery, Robecq. The CWGC lists "Son of F. and Ellen Webb, of 8, Lynwood Terrace, Blandford Rd., Hamworthy, Poole, Dorset. Born at Liphook, Sussex".

CHARLES GEORGE RIGLER

41796 Pte Charles George Rigler 7 Bn Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, Formerly 33194 Pte Somerset Light Infantry. Charles was born in Poole and resided in Hamworthy. He enlisted for the Great War in Poole. Charles was Killed in Action (Presumed Dead) on the 16th August 1917 aged 28. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial to the missing. The CWGC lists "Son of Frederick James and Emma Rigler, of "Neruilly", Heckford Rd., Poole, Dorset; husband of Alice Maud Rigler, of 9, Ivor Rd., Hamworthy, Poole, Dorset".

GEORGE OLIVER MOTTASHAW

27904 Pte George Oliver Mottashaw 6 Bn Wiltshire Regiment, Formerly 41235 Pte Somerset Light Infantry. George was born in Crieff, Perth and resided in Dundee. He enlisted for the Great War in Dorchester. George Died of Wounds whilst a prisoner of war on the 23rd August 1918 aged 20. He was buried in Marle Communal Cemetery, German Extension and is now commemorated in Grand-Seraucourt British Cemetery.

BERTRAM BILES

424332 Pte Bertram William Biles 45 Bn Canadian Infantry. Bertram was born on the 16th April 1893 in Poole. He enlisted for the Great War in March 1915 in Brandon, Canada. Before this he had been a Farm Hand (Flour Miller). He had moved to Canada after a breakdown in health at the age of 19.Bertram was wounded whilst serving with the 5th Canadian Inf on the 2nd June 1916 with a gun shot wound to the right shoulder and lung. It would appear that this had a deep impact on him as he became increasingly nervous after this. When offered a discharge from hospital he refused it, and spent a few months as a clerk in Shoreham. He was sent back to the front but broke down after 5 weeks following a thunder storm. After this he suffered from several breakdowns and was eventually admitted to Hospital with Shell Shock. Bertram was then invalided to Canada where he was given a medical discharge on the 15th February 1918. Bertram Died on the 16th December 1918 aged 25. He is buried in Winnipeg (Brookside) Cemetery. The CWGC lists "Son of Dan and Elizabeth Biles, of Harbour Rd., Hansworth, Poole, England".

FREDERICK JOYCE

19154 Pte Frederick William Tidby Joyce 2/4 Bn Hampshire Regiment. Frederick was born on the 9th April 1877. He resided at 10 Ivor Road, Hamworthy. He enlisted for the Great War at Guildford in July 1915 having previously been a Labourer. Before this however he had served in the Royal Navy from 1901 to 1908. Frederick Died on the 16th April 1919 aged 42. He was buried on the 20th April 1919 in Hamworthy (St. Michael) Churchyard. The CWGC lists "Son of James Henry and Maria Joyce, of 10, Ivor Rd., Hamworthy".

PERCY LEONARD BLOOMFIELD

31251 Pte Percy Leonard Bloomfield 9 Bn Devon Regiment. Percy was born and resided in Hamworthy. He enlisted for the Great War in Poole. Percy was Killed in Action (Presumed Dead) on the 26th October 1917 aged 19. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial to the missing. The CWGC lists "Son of John Robert and Elizabeth Bloomfield, of 183, Lake Rd., Hamworthy, Poole, Dorset".

WILLIAM WASHER

31265 Pte William Charles Washer 9 Bn Devon Regiment. William was born in Bridport and resided in Hamworthy. He enlisted for the Great War in Poole. William was Killed in Action (Presumed Dead) on the 26th October 1917 aged 42. He is now buried in Hooge Crater Cemetery. The CWGC lists "Son of Harry and Mary Washer; husband of Ada Washer, of The Haven, Hamworthy, Poole, Dorset". His body was found after the war and identified by his identity disc.

ARTHUR BRATCHER

1633 Dvr Fred Arthur Bratcher D Battery 112 Brigade Royal Field Artillery. Fred was born in Poole and enlisted for the Great War in Poole too. He was Killed in Action on the 24th March 1918 aged 27. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial. The CWGC lists "Son of Frederick and Mary Bratcher; husband of the late Emily A. L. Bratcher".

ALFRED OWEN SMITH

S/19822 (2811) Rfn Alfred Owen Smith 25 Garrison Bn Rifle Brigade. Alfred was born in Looe and resided at 4 Bakery Cottages Hamworthy. He enlisted for the Great War in Poole. Alfred Died on the 9th November 1916 in Falmouth aged 39. He is buried in Hamworthy (St. Michael) Churchyard.
