100803 Sgt Percy George Barnes 169 Coy Labour Corps, Formerly 54595 Sgt 4 Infantry Labour Coy Devon Regiment and 10851 Dorset Regiment. Percy was born and resided in Fontmell Magna. He enlisted for the Great War in Gillingham. Percy Died on the 31st July 1917 aged 26. He is buried in Duisans British Cemetery, Etrun. The CWGC lists “Son of Joseph and Emily Ann Barnes, of 54, West St., Fontmell Magna, Shaftesbury, Dorset”.

B J BRADLEY

F/561 Pte Bertie John Bradley 17 Bn Middlesex Regiment. Bertie was born in Fontmell Magna and resided in Kensal Rise, Middlesex. He enlisted for the Great War in Shepherd’s Bush. Bertie Died of Wounds on the 27th February 1916 aged 20. He is buried in Calais Southern Cemetery. The CWGC lists “Son of Albert Edward and Fanny Elizabeth Bradley, of Fontmell Magna, Shaftesbury, Dorset”.

19209 Pte Frederick George Frampton 5 Bn Wiltshire Regiment. Frederick was born and resided in Shaftesbury. He enlisted for the Great War in Devizes. Frederick was Killed in Action on the 5th April 1916. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Basra Memorial.

12617 Pte Frederick George Haskett 5 Bn Dorset Regiment. Frederick was born in Weymouth. He enlisted for the Great War in Shaftesbury. Frederick was Killed in Action on the 13th June 1917 aged 20. He has no known grave and is now commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial to the missing in Ypres. The CWGC lists “Son of Harriet Haskett, of 75, Bedchester, Shaftesbury, Dorset, and the late Alfred Haskett. His brother also fell”. 34258 Pte Henry (Harry) Charles Haskett 2/4 Bn Royal Berkshire Regiment, formerly 25855 Pte Dorset Regiment. Harry was born in Woodbridge and resided in Shaftesbury. He enlisted for the Great War in Dorchester. Harry was Killed in Action on the 21st March 1918 aged 24. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial. The CWGC lists “Son of Mrs. H. Haskett, of 75, Bedchester, Shaftesbury, Dorset”. His brother also appears on the Fontmell Magna War Memorial, see previous entry.

14482 Pte James Robert Hatcher 5 Bn Dorset Regiment. James was born in Farrington and resided in Fontmell Magna. He enlisted for the Great War in Shaftesbury. James was Killed in Action on the 26th September 1916. His remains were recovered in 1919 by a Canadian Burial Party. He is buried in Pozieres British Cemetery, Ovillers-La-Boisselle.

A JENKINS – CORPL.

13022 L/Cpl Albert Jenkins 1 Bn Dorset Regiment. Albert was born and resided in Fontmell Magna. He enlisted for the Great War in Shaftesbury. Albert was Killed in Action on the 2nd July 1916. He is buried in Blighty Valley Cemetery, Authuille Wood.

W S LAWRENCE

3/7690 Pte William Sidney Lawrence 1 Bn Dorset Regiment. William was born and resided in Fontmell Magna. He was a Special Reservist and enlisted in Blandford. William was present at Hill 60 on the 1st May 1915 when the 1st Dorsets were gassed in one of the first of such attacks of this new form of warfare. William died from gas poisoning on the 2nd May 1915 aged 37. He has no known grave and is now commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial to the missing in Ypres. The CWGC lists “Son of Tom and Ann Lawrence, of 48, Fontmell Magna, Shaftesbury, Dorset”.

V G MERRIFIELD – CORPL.

10194 L/Cpl Victor George Merrifield 5 Bn Dorset Regiment. Victor was born and resided in Fontmell Magna. He enlisted for the Great War in Blandford. Victor was Killed in Action at Gallipoli on the 21st August 1915 aged 23. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Helles Memorial. The CWGC lists “Son of Henry and Annie Merrifield, of 37, South St., Fontmell Magna, Shaftesbury, Dorset”.

W H MOWLEM

31744 Pte Wesley Harry Mowlem 1 Bn Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry, formerly 16302 Pte Dorset Regiment. Wesley was born in Holnest. He enlisted for the Great War in Fontmell Magna. Wesley was Killed in Action on the 30th October 1917 aged 21. His remains were recovered in 1924 and identified by his damaged ID disc. He is buried in Birr Cross Roads Cemetery. The CWGC lists “Son of Robert and Rosetta Mowlem, of Fontmell Magna, Shaftesbury, Dorset”.

F JESSE

44857 Pte Frank Jesse 2 Bn Royal Berkshire Regiment, Formerly 54666 Pte Hampshire Regiment. Frank was born in Fontmell Magna and resided in East Knoyle. He enlisted for the Great War in Sturminster Newton. Frank was Killed in Action on the 27th May 1918 aged 19. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Soissons Memorial. The CWGC lists “Son of the late William and Rose Jesse”.

SS/1310 A/Cpl Cecil John Reeves 63rd Field Bakery Army Service Corps. Cecil was born and resided in Shaftesbury. He enlisted for the Great War in Wrexham. Cecil Died on the 9th May 1917 aged 28. He is buried in Fontmell Magna (St. Andrew) Churchyard. The CWGC lists “Son of Walter and Emily Reeves, of 40, Fontmell Magna, Shaftesbury”.

F RIDEOUT

5987 Pte Frederick Rideout 1 Bn Dorset Regiment. Frederick was born and resided in Fontmell Magna. He was a pre war regular soldier having enlisted in Shaftesbury. Frederick was Killed in Action on the 13th October 1914. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial.

40405 Pte Harold Martin Roberts 10 Bn Royal Warwickshire Regiment. Harold was born in Semley and resided in Fontmell Magna. He enlisted for the Great War in Fulham. Harold was Killed in Action on the 25th September 1918. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Loos Memorial.

13026 L/Sgt Sidney Shute 5 Bn Dorset Regiment. Sidney was born and resided in Fontmell Magna. Sidney enlisted for the Great War in Dorchester. Sidney was Killed in Action on the 11th January 1917 aged 18. He has no known grave and is now commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the missing on the Somme. The CWGC lists “Son of Henry Young Shute and Anna Shute, of 41, Fontmell Magna, Shaftesbury, Dorset”.

2 Lieut Humphrey Osborn Springfield Warwickshire Yeomanry. Humphrey resided in Fontmell Magna. Humphrey was Killed in Action on the 5th August 1916 aged 29. He is buried in Kantara War Memorial Cemetery. The CWGC lists “Son of Thomas Osborn Springfield and Maud Beatrice Springfield. Native of Norfolk”.

15290 Pte Charles Henry Stone 1 Bn Somerset Light Infantry. Charles was born in Bridport and resided in Shaftesbury. He enlisted for the Great War in Yeovil. Charles Died of Wounds on the 3rd July 1916 aged 23. He is buried in Couin British Cemetery. The CWGC lists “Son of John and Eliza Elizabeth Stone, of Fontmell Magna, Shaftesbury, Dorset”. 165818 Gnr Thomas John Stone 111 Siege Battery Royal Garrison Artillery. Thomas was born in Shipton Gorge and resided in Shaftesbury. He enlisted for the Great War in Weymouth. Thomas was Killed in Action on the 16th August 1917. He is buried in Artillery Wood Cemetery. The CWGC lists “Son of John and Eliza E. Stone, of Fontmell Magna; husband of Martha A. C. Stone, of Fontmell Magna, Shaftesbury, Dorset”. His brother also appears on the Fontmell Magna War Memorial, see previous entry.
