He was tasked with taking a Platoon to defend a building just in front of the Turkish lines, and hold it for 24 hours. On the approach, the group had wandered to the right and came under heavy fire 300 yards into the journey from their left, and then a trench not far from their front. Frank seized the initiative and charged the trench close by, followed by his men, which they then promptly took, capturing 14 Turks and killing many others. The trench was then consolidated by forming barracades at either end. It was soon found by another Platoon that the Turks had removed the back wall of the building they had been heading for, and thus rendering it useless as a defensive poistion. The operation was called off and Frank successfully made it back to the British lines with his men. On the 20th August, Frank went out into no man's land to investigate, as the Turks had out up white flags. Using his best French, he negotiated a temporary truce so that the wounded still lying out in no man's land could be recovered. Frank was Killed in Action on the 22nd August 1915 at Gallipoli. He had been hit and killed by Turkish sharpnel during the first wave of the attack before reaching the enemy trenches. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Helles Memorial.
